Description

The Town of Needham is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill a summer position as a Student Intern working in the Accounting Department. Reporting to the Town Accountant, this internship will facilitate learning the intricacies of municipal accounting, including day-to-day activities and supporting year-end reporting. The ideal candidate is a college student actively seeking their degree in governmental studies, finance, or accounting with a future interest in serving the public sector.

This internship is scheduled to run from roughly May 1 through September 30, 2026.

Schedule: 37.5 hours/week

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm
  • Tuesday, 8:00 am-6:00 pm
  • Friday, 8:00 am-12:30 pm

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:

  • Assists with Accounts Payable including checking and correcting vendor payment batches, adding invoice batches, updating vendor records in online platform.
  • Reviews and processes requests for purchase orders.
  • Reviews current year payroll rollover to future year for accuracy.
  • Tracks year-end information needed for the Town Report and the Fiscal Year budget introduction through available platforms.
  • Updates Special Revenue schedules, Unrecorded Liabilities, and Utilities used to track data figures and transfers.
  • Pulls documentation for Fixed Asset schedule.
  • Maintains excel spreadsheets, performs administrative tasks, and supports other related projects as time allows.

Requirements

The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • College student with courses in Governmental Studies, Finance, or Accounting
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks and duties
  • Prior experience with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Infinite Visions is desired
