About the Job

The Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul invites applications for a contract (non-tenure) full-time (100% appointment) faculty position in Large Animal Internal Medicine. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor at the University of Minnesota. The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, consistent with Collegiate and University policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional clinical service in Large Animal Medicine (LAM) at the Veterinary Medical Center, which includes the Piper Equine Hospital and Large Animal Hospital, and didactic/clinical teaching of veterinary students, under delegated authority of the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
  • Provide after-hours emergency coverage, urgent-care daytime service, occasional daytime, and consultation to regional veterinarians.
  • Provide didactic instruction of veterinary students; supervision and clinical instruction of interns, residents, and professional students as they rotate through the LAM service; mentorship of LAM residents, and participation in resident training activities such as seminars, board exam preparation, and journal club.
  • Develop close relationships with clients and referring veterinarians to provide comprehensive care and oversight for equine and food and fiber patients.
  • Participate in scholarly activities and demonstrate a collegial, collaborative approach and willingness to participate in departmental initiatives, programs and committees.

The clinical service is shared among 4 faculty. The caseload is approximately 70% equine, with the remainder comprising llamas/alpacas, pet pigs, and goats, with occasional sheep and cattle. Experienced internists and residents finishing training programs in equine-exclusive medicine who are interested in mixed large animal practice are encouraged to apply. While scholarly activities are encouraged and expected, development of an independent research program is not an expectation of this position, nor is it required for academic advancement.

The University of Minnesota seeks candidates who are interested in programs that support community and belonging and excellence of the academic community through their service, teaching, research, and outreach. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional clinical service, teaching, student mentorship, and contribute to the national prominence of the Veterinary Medical Center, VPM Department, and the University of Minnesota.
