What You'll Do

First level Supervisor providing leadership, technical direction and oversight to Product Engineers responsible for the oversight of customer technical requirements related to the production, evaluation, and dismantlement of weapons and weapons components. Responsible for maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness, flow down of goals, expectations, and priorities and integrating work within the supervised organization. Monitors department workload to ensure staff is cognizant of schedule, and technical commitments. Advises management of staffing needs necessary to address both forecast and emerging workload. Provides input to management on budgets, proposals, cost estimates, schedules, and related documents required to meet customer needs. Frequent contact with external and internal customers is required.



Maintains a lead technical role in the negotiation of agreements with respect to design and manufacturing requirements of weapons components and assemblies to support all production requirements in accordance with DOE/AL directive documents. Develops and provides qualified technical resources to execute Product Engineering functions in support of Y-12 mission deliverables. Maintains a staff with knowledge and ability to serve as primary contacts to establish product definition and work scope by development of the appropriate manufacturing plans, product specifications, work instructions, and other documents necessary to manage customer requirements. Staff also interfaces with customers to provide programmatic and technical feedback at program reviews, product realization team meetings, and planning meetings. May direct multi-disciplined teams to resolve production/manufacturing issues related to weapons programs and is responsible for establishing plans, tracking progress and providing updates/reports to the appropriate program managers. May also be required to assist in major procurement efforts associated with weapons program work and work with outside vendors as necessary to procure hardware and/or materials that are outside of Y-12's current manufacturing capabilities.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET.
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Requires experience with and knowledge of Y-12 manufacturing and assembly operations and a broad interdisciplinary Y-12 knowledge base.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated leadership in Product Realization and proficient in the technical requirements of the 6.X process
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS) technical requirements
  • 8 years of experience in a technical position supporting Y-12 manufacturing operations


  • A history of productive interaction with our Design Agency partners
  • Demonstrated skill in effective planning, writing, organization, communication, schedule compliance, and management of technical issues

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
