Job Summary

Under direction of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Hart Interdisciplinary Programs (HIP), assigned to the African American and African Studies department (AAS) to provide support to the Chair and the Undergraduate Advisors in the areas of Advising and Counseling, Admissions and Academic Services, and Undergraduate Program Development and Administration. Maintain a close working relationship with the Director of Undergraduate Education and Advising (UEA) in the College of Letters and Science (L&S) to ensure that the AAS Undergraduate Advising program is consistent with the advising goals of the College. Manage the AAS undergraduate academic program and provide advising and counseling to undergraduate students with the following core responsibilities: -Organize and provide leadership on all advising functions, confidential issues and materials involving interaction with university administrators, deans and faculty, staff, students, and the general public; -Build and expand the undergraduate AAS program, while supporting all undergraduate students at UC Davis in general; -Support administratively the day-to-day organization of the undergraduate curriculum; -Liaison, as needed, with the Campus Director of Academic Advising to implement campus-wide academic advising initiatives and act as the representative of the unit in discussions with other student-oriented units across campus, including all four colleges, Student Judicial Affairs, the Student Disabilities Center, Financial Aid Office, Intercollegiate Athletics, Education Abroad Program, Undergraduate Education, Student Academic Success Center, EOP, CLL and the ICC.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Baccalaureate degree and/or equivalent in education, psychology, sociology, counseling or related field.
  • Experience using counseling and guidance techniques to provide advice and counsel to students in a college or university environment.
  • Interpersonal, communication, and effective listening skills to interact positively and cooperatively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff and the general public; and to provide guidance to emotionally upset students and parents.
  • Problem solving skills to identify and document patterns of student academic needs and to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet those needs.
  • Skills to examine and assess college transcripts and accurately compute grade point averages and grade point balances.
  • Knowledge of multi-cultural dynamics within a University setting, and the academic environment and pressures encountered by students at a major research university, and of the personal and social problems commonly encountered by college students of all backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units prerequisites, majors and minors).

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A. degree in African American Studies, Higher Education Administration, Counseling and Guidance or related fields.
  • Experience with the rules and regulations governing undergraduate education as set by the Academic Senate.
  • Experience developing, organizing and implementing educational programs, workshops or seminars to enhance student development and retention within the African American student community.
  • Experience working with AAS parents, alumni, AAPI, community groups, and organizations.
  • Knowledge of UC, Federal and State policies and laws regarding privacy of information.
  • Writing, editing and proofreading skills to compose correspondence and prepare clear and concise summaries.
  • Skills to use a personal computer, including custom software developed for the UEA in the College of Letters and Science.
  • Knowledge of statewide, national and international college and university programs.
  • Skills to address the financial, emotional, and academic special needs of students of African American and African descent in an institution of higher learning.

Department Overview

The SAO position oversees all undergraduate education and advising functions for the AAS majors and minors in the Division of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies in L&S. Guides and manages a complex cohort of students as they consider admission to the campus, enroll, change or add majors and minors, pursue academic excellence, seek exceptions to policies, encounter problems, and proceed toward their degree. The SAO is also responsible for working with the program faculty on curriculum and other matters of undergraduate education in AAS. Independently exercises substantial delegated authority from the Faculty Undergraduate Advisors (s) and Department Chair within broad policy and procedural parameters established by the College of Letters and Science and Faculty Committees. The SAOs in Hart Interdisciplinary Programs provide crucial support to affected student communities during incidents of racial harassment or discrimination at UC Davis. Throughout the campus, the SAO will play significant roles in the delivery of academic advising services and other programs and responsibilities associated with undergraduate education including: Providing leadership and acting as a representative of the program to promote AAS within UC Davis and California schools and colleges more broadly. Designing strategies and materials to promote AAS course offerings to the UC Davis undergraduate community, in general. Collecting and maintaining alumni records and developing materials about careers made possible with AAS degrees. Representing the respective programs at public forums and responding on behalf of the program to inquiries or complaints from the general public.
