Qualifications

Education

Must have High School Diploma or GED. Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Pass or achieve an acceptable score on all pre-employment screening. Pass an extensive background investigation. Continued employmentis contingent upon successful attainment and ability to perform duties associated with job related certifications (CPR, IHASS, first aid, etc.) within the timeframe established by the department.

One year of experience preferably in a security related field.

What You'll Do:


  • Serve as a professional representative of Duke Health, consistently modeling respect, urgency, empathy, and exceptional customer service.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally using two-way radios, computers, email, and verbal interactions with departments, partner agencies, patients, and visitors.
  • Patrol and monitor premises-on foot or by vehicle-to deter crime, identify safety risks, and ensure a safe environment.
  • Respond promptly to alarms, traffic control needs, medical emergencies, motorist assistance requests, suspicious activity, and other calls for service.
  • De-escalate tense or emotional situations by remaining calm, empathetic, and in control.
  • Support clinical teams by responding to patient intervention calls and, when necessary, safely restraining individuals in accordance with CPI, Vistelar, and departmental training.
  • Maintain a weapons-free environment through screening, monitoring, controlled access, and detection technologies.
  • Conduct property searches as needed to prevent contraband from entering the facility.
  • Support compliance with University and Hospital policies, including smoking, access control, and safety guidelines.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks and report safety hazards or operational concerns.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of assigned facilities, grounds, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain all required certifications, including CPI, Vistelar, CPR, and-where applicable-PPSB and TASER authorization.
  • Perform other responsibilities that support Duke's commitment to a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $21.42 to USD $28.94. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
