We are seeking a
Laboratory Manager who will be responsible for the scientific and administrative activities of one or more related laboratories. The Laboratory Manager applies extensive knowledge of the laboratory's research interests to meet the overall objectives. Partners with Principal Investigators (PIs) to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop, design, conduct, and manage research projects.
- Coordinate own objectives and those of laboratory team members.
- Supervise data collection and verification using related specialized skills and knowledge.
- Manage staff including involvement in training, oversight, hiring, and performance management.
- Serve as a resource for all faculty, learners, and staff working in the laboratory.
- Responsible for facility related issues and management of projects, e.g., lab renovations, equipment purchases, work with contractors, associated costs, etc.
- Approve significant grant expenditures and approve significant equipment purchases in collaboration with PI(s) and finance staff.
- Create and implement new protocols, oversee assay validations in conjunction with PI(s).
- Responsible for overall operational elements of laboratory under general supervision of faculty researchers.
- Responsible for systems used to track and analyze results.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above
- Assist the study Principal Investigator (PI) in communications with Johns Hopkins Office of Research Administration (ORA) for contracting, agreements, and managing relationships with internal and external collaborators.
- Assist with the maintenance of a centralized listing of past, active, and future clinical research projects.
- Develop and update/maintain study documents including protocols, amendments, case report forms, SOPs, lab manuals, training documents and regulatory materials using an electronic lab notebook (Benchling).
- Maintain the biospecimen inventory housed in -80C freezers using Lockbox LIMS and freezer monitoring using a wireless remote temperature monitoring system
- Maintain and update the clinical registry using the electronic data capture system - REDCap.
- Supervises and maintain lab inventory levels of reagents, kits and chemicals.
- Hire and supervise research staff including research technologists, research coordinators, research specialists, graduate and undergraduate students.
- Supervise staff and assist PI as needed on IRB and Office of Research Administration submissions to ensure compliance.
- Coordinate with ORA in budget development with sponsors.
- Submit reimbursements on behalf of the PI
- In collaboration with the Neurology grants team, assist with drafting budgets and subcontracts and supporting documents for grant submission.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Five years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory or lead experience in a laboratory
- Master's degree, with related graduate research.
- Experience in phlebotomy.
- Experience in histopathology techniques and microscopy.
- Proficiency in the use of common software applications including databases (REDCap, etc.), regulatory applications (eIRB, etc.), clinical computer systems (Epic, etc.), spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Experience in budget generation, contractual process and financial management of clinical trials preferred.
- Proficiency in writing SOPs, technical and programmatic reports.
