What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an experienced Hazardous Material Packaging Specialist (HMPS) to support the SNL/NM U.S/UK Logistics Program. The U.S/UK Logistics Program is the primary interface for material and hardware movements throughout the DOE Complex in support of the NNSA NA 122.22 UK Program. The selected candidate will oversee the transshipment of material from UK to the various sites within the DOE Complex. You will ensure regulatory compliance with 49 CFR and IATA for all shipments leaving Sandia National Laboratories to the end destination.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Create Web shippers for transshipment of MDA material.
  • Complete Move It requests for onsite transportation of program materials.
  • Perform hazard review for Web shippers to ensure compliance with 49CFR/IATA regulations.
  • Provide packing instructions to prepare hazardous materials for shipment, including marking, labelling, and container select.
  • Oversee packaging activities to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Sign legal shipping papers on behalf of SNL.
  • Communicating with Labs, Plants and Sites (LPS's) to ensure proper notifications for shipment have been given.
  • Send and receive confirmation of receipt emails to LPS's.
  • Ensure compliance for classified shipments including notification and receipts.
  • Document receipts of packages and items in the Joint Material Accountability and Tracking System (JMATS).
  • Act as the Alternate custodian for the VTR.
  • Participate in and provide feedback for various program meetings. Meetings will include travel to domestic and international locations.
  • Coordinating efforts of Shipping and Receiving, Corporate Storage, Radiological Protection, Line Organizations and SNL Security, for UK shipments.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of procedures and program documents as required.
  • Ensuring proper maintenance and operation of the 6035 warehouse and associated equipment.

Occasional travel to domestic and foreign locations

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$74,700 - $144,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. A higher-level degree (MS, PhD) in relevant discipline may also be considered in lieu of
    Bachelor's degree.
  • Experienced in the following:
    • Interpret federal, state, and local hazardous material standards and regulations.
    • Management of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

  • Experience in hazardous material management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control, or transportation.
  • Knowledge of safety basis processes and implementation in hazardous material management.
  • In-depth knowledge of explosive, nuclear, or radiological material compatibility requirements.
  • Knowledge of DOE security orders in reference to VTR's, Classified matter movements, and CWS requirements.
About Our Team

Department 4761 - Enabling Sandia's Mission by providing support to NA122.2 and the United Kingdom to meet all transportation needs of the program. We ensure compliance with all applicable regulations for classified and unclassified materials as well as all types of hazardous materials including radioactive and explosive materials. The program facilitates the movement of all materials under the 1958 Mutual Defense Agreement. Modes of transportation include the United Kingdom government aircraft, commercial transportation, and shipments involving the Office of Secure Transportation (OST). Provides specialized packaging and labeling of hazardous materials to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient packaging, handling, and transportation of hazardous materials. Meet all shipping regulations that apply to air, ground, vessel and military transport.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
