Job Overview:
We are seeking a Biogas Compressor Technician to support our Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and industrial compressor operations. This position is responsible for the safe maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, and commissioning/startup of rotary screw and reciprocating compressors and associated mechanical and electrical equipment.
The role will be based out of our Schaumburg, IL shop, where responsibilities will include compressor overhauls, organizing shop inventory, packaging orders, and preparing equipment for field deployment, along with field service work across the U.S., with potential travel into Canada.
This is a hands-on role well suited to individuals who enjoy mechanical work, problem-solving, and working in both shop and field environments.
Responsibilities:
Compressor Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul-
- Perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on rotary screw and reciprocating compressors, including all ancillary equipment (air dryers, filters, separators, coolers, motors, valves, and piping).
- Complete full compressor overhauls in the shop, including disassembly, inspection, reconditioning, and reassembly.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues affecting compressor performance and reliability.
- Assist with new compressor installations, including mechanical assembly, piping connections, inspections, and startup support.
- Install and maintain industrial-sized gas and air compressors.
- Generate and close repair work orders identifying deficiencies and corrective actions.
- Ensure all preventive maintenance tasks are documented, scheduled, and completed per company standards.
Shop & Warehouse Responsibilities (Schaumburg, IL) -
- Organize and maintain shop inventory, tools, parts, and compressor components.
- Pick, package, and prepare Equipment and parts orders for shipment.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
- Support equipment staging and preparation for field service and commissioning activities.
Field Service & Commissioning -
- Travel from the Schaumburg shop to customer job sites to perform checkout, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning/startup of compressor systems and related equipment.
- Perform service work on supporting equipment including motors, pumps, VFDs, valves, actuators, and electrical equipment
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and electrical schematics.
- Modify technical documentation and drawings (redlines) to reflect final field changes and as-built conditions.
- Be available for on-call customer service support as required.
Safety, Quality & Documentation -
- Perform all work in accordance with company safety policies and established procedures.
- Support QHS goals, objectives, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment histories.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments as required.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in industrial maintenance, compressor service, or gas processing/energy-related environments.
- Mechanical aptitude, able to work on rotating equipment and industrial systems.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and electrical schematics.
- Troubleshooting skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions.
- Proficiency with Windows-based software (Outlook, Word, Excel) on a PC or tablet.
- Valid U.S. driver's license with the ability to operate a company vehicle.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and 25 lbs routinely.
- Ability to bend, stoop, crouch, and maneuver around compressor skids, piping, and industrial equipment.
Preferences:
- Trade certification or technical diploma (mechanical, millwright, industrial maintenance, or related field).
- Prior experience with screw compressor commissioning and servicing.
- Background in renewable energy, petrochemical, power generation, pulp & paper, food processing, or similar industrial sectors.
- Experience working in explosive or hazardous industrial environments.
- Familiarity with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and industrial motors.
Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements:
- Onsite role with travel.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the United States, with potential travel to Canada (approximately 75% travel expected).
- Work performed in shop, field, and outdoor industrial environments, including extended workdays when required.
