The Research Training and Education Team at the MaineHealth Institute for Research supports learning experiences for students and trainees across molecular medicine, population and health research, and clinical and translational science. We manage all logistics for undergraduate interns, PhD thesis students, medical students, master's students, and postdoctoral research fellows. Our work includes onboarding, event facilitation, program infrastructure, and professional development. We also lead outreach efforts to help young people in our community learn about careers in research.

The Intern - MaineHealth Research Institute role participates in projects with qualified mentors and staff and is given opportunities for practical laboratory and/or clinical research experiences. Internships allow students to explore the practical aspects of biomedical research by participating in ongoing projects and observing or learning techniques.

Our summer intern will have three areas of focus:

1. Support for the Summer Undergraduate Program (June-August)

The intern will assist the Summer Undergraduate Program Lead with the coordination and daily operations of the summer research program.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Communicating with interns and responding to program-related questions
  • Assisting with scheduling, reminders, and weekly program updates
  • Helping organize and support program events, workshops, and activities
  • Contributing to general logistics to ensure a smooth trainee experience
2. Research Trainee Alumni Outcomes Project

The intern will support an update of our research trainee alumni outcomes database by:

  • Conducting online research to identify current positions and educational progress of former trainees
  • Updating and organizing data in the alumni database
  • Verifying and maintaining data accuracy across sources
  • Contributing to summary materials or visualizations of updated outcomes, as needed
3. Communications and Internal Engagement

The intern will assist with internal communication efforts that support both staff and current trainees. Tasks may include:

  • Creating or updating slides for Research Training and Education staff meetings
  • Helping draft and send announcements about opportunities for trainees
  • Supporting the upkeep of communication channels (e.g., email lists, internal updates)
  • Contributing ideas for improving trainee engagement and clarity of messaging
  • Assisting with the Responsible Conduct of Research events

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: Enrollment in an undergraduate college program or community college program, or a High School senior who is at least 18 years of age required. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above required.
