Director of Engineering
Job Purpose

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of manufacturing methods, processes, and operations for new and existing products. This role is accountable for driving technical excellence and process consistency to meet the strategic objective of delivering an outstanding customer experience.

As the functional leader for the facility, this position oversees Process Engineering, Test Engineering, SMT Engineering, Maintenance, and Document Control departments.



Key Responsibilities & Duties

1. Operational Leadership & Strategy



  • Strategic Planning: Receive assignments in the form of objectives and establish goals to meet those objectives. Participate in plant staff meetings and conduct Engineering department staff meetings to cascade priorities.
  • Department Management: Manages the activities of the team and is responsible for staffing decisions, training and development, and performance management of the staff.
  • Resource Management: Ensure the effective use of materials, equipment, and personnel in producing quality products at minimum costs.
  • NPI & Quoting: Work directly with Customers in releasing new products. This includes reviewing labor quotes, ensuring appropriate capabilities for current and new technologies, and establishing implementation schedules.


2. Technical & Data Proficiency



  • Data-Driven Leadership: Ability to take a "hands-on" approach to data, creating reporting metrics to monitor achievement, costs, and production performance.
  • Strategic Visualization: Highly desired expertise in programming and data visualization tools to extract data, plan execution, and present technical strategies to stakeholders.
  • Capital Projects: Responsible for the full lifecycle of Capital Expenditure (Capex), including the evaluation and commissioning of new SMT and HLA production lines



3. Execution & Problem Solving



  • Problem Resolution: work on issues of diverse scope where analysis of the situation requires evaluation of a variety of factors, including business trends. Act as an advisor to subordinates to resolve technical problems.
  • Schedules: Develop and administer schedules and performance requirements. Manage the schedule of deliverables agreed to for the engineering units overall.




Education and Experience

Required Qualifications:



  • Education: BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering required.
  • Experience: 10-15 years of engineering management experience required.
  • Industry Knowledge:

    • SMT & PCBA: Deep technical expertise in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) processes, including solder paste deposition, high-speed component placement, and reflow optimization.
    • High-Level Assembly (HLA): Proven experience in complex Boxbuild manufacturing, focusing on system integration, chassis assembly, and final functional testing.
    • NPI & DFM Leadership: Expertise in guiding products from prototype to volume production using Design for Manufacturability (DFM) to balance cost, reliability, and assembly time.
    • Advanced Process Control: Mastery of manufacturing techniques such as line balancing, SPC, automation, and yield analysis to ensure process consistency.




Preferred Skills:



  • Financial Acumen: Experience with budgeting, managing to a budget, and headcount planning.
  • Technical Proficiency: The role requires strong verbal presentation skills, especially when addressing a technical audience. Expertise in programming and data visualization tools is highly desired, as these skills are essential for extracting data, planning, monitoring execution, and presenting effective technical strategies.



Core Competencies

  • Leadership: Excellent small cross-functional team leadership skills. Responsible for selecting and developing people, and provides leadership to engineering groups.
  • Policy & Procedure: Responsible for establishing organizational policies and recommending modifications to existing policies that directly impact the immediate organization.
  • Guidance: Provide guidance and advice to group members related to their approaches and methodologies.
