About the Job

Position Overview:

The Institute for Engineering in Medicine's Visible Heart Laboratories at the University of Minnesota seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a team working on multiple research projects related to the cardiovascular anatomy in human hearts from the Visible Heart Laboratories library, mixed reality projects, and pre-clinical cardiac medical device testing.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Regularly assist with preclinical research studies, including large animal models and isolated hearts
  • Assist with human heart anatomical studies and imaging and developing high resolution computational models and 3D printed models to be used for device testing
  • Work under general supervision but is given the latitude to make decisions on projects that s/he is accountable for delivering on; decisions may involve an approach from among alternatives, determining how to best use available resources.
  • Design and/or implement preclinical research studies associated with industry collaborators
  • Write, edit or critique technical reports and/or publications describing research results to be submitted to peer reviewed journals
  • Communicate and present analytical results to researchers, faculty, and other academic professionals in associated fields of expertise (spoken presentations, poster or written work summaries for display, conferences, etc.)
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD with knowledge in cardiac anatomy, physiology, and cardiac transcatheter valves, including pulmonic valves
  • Previous research experience in computational modeling in cardiac anatomy
  • Strong time management, analytical, communication/writing, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to both work well independently, or as part of a fast-paced research team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with internal and external research collaborators (academic, clinical, and industrial)
  • Excellent skill acquisition and problem-based learning skills
  • Excellent organizational and quantitative skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in devices associated with Cardiology or transcather pulmonic valves
  • Experience with leading projects within a research team including scientists and clinicians
  • Experience in a teaching or mentoring role, engineers, medical students or fellows
  • A record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, with ability to submit publications
About the Department

The Visible Heart Laboratories embody a creative atmosphere which is energized by some of the best and brightest students at the University. Our lab staff has over 100 years of collective research experience and functions as a highly efficient and productive team. Dr. Paul A. Iaizzo has been at the University of Minnesota since 1990, performing research and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses. In 1996, Dr. Iaizzo and his coworkers began working on large mammalian isolated heart models, and thus the Visible Heart Laboratories were created in collaboration with Medtronic. Today, these labs are a premiere place to perform translational systems physiology research which ranges from cellular and tissue studies to organ and whole body investigations. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $61,008-$62,232 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
