Are you an experienced landscaping professional with a passion for leadership and community spaces? New Hanover County is looking for an experienced Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to join our Parks & Gardens team. This role will oversee and manage New Hanover County facility grounds maintenance contracts to include fire stations, detention center, graveyards, libraries, museums, Health and Human Services, FEMA properties, etc.
The Parks & Gardens Department's mission is to maintain and operate parks and facilities that enrich the lives of the community and promote an overall healthier lifestyle. The department manages and maintains over 2,900 acres including parks & athletic facilities, historic Airlie Gardens, and County-owned non-park facilities such as the county libraries, the Cape Fear Museum, NHC Jail and Fire Stations.
Responsibilities for this role include:
- Supervises grounds maintenance contractors to include participation with the bid proposal and selection process.
- Oversees landscape and irrigation plan design and implementation, inspects drawings, and applies applicable regulatory provisions, transports and operates heavy equipment, and directs installation and maintenance.
- Coordinates ongoing programs including turf management, pest management, and fertilizing by developing long-term objectives and daily schedules.
- Maintains records on operations regarding data on safety issues and chemical inventories required by environmental protection standards.
- Determines and recommends equipment and supply needs.
- Prepares bid specifications and chooses appropriate vendors.
- Conducts consistent inspections on grounds maintenance properties on landscape and grass care techniques, equipment operation, and safety issues.
- Provides assistance with special events and coordinates traffic direction and transportation.
- Installs special equipment and signage.
- Serves as a customer service liaison to the general public.
- Designs landscapes and selects plant materials.
- Prepares logistics-set-up, staff, and break-down for events.
- Manages employee files and employee training program.
- Monitors and assists with budget preparation and forecasts expenditures and makes recommendations for capital improvements.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of supervisory principles; County personnel policies and procedures; horticulture concepts; landscaping techniques; training techniques; general mechanical concepts; turf management techniques; herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides; techniques for safe operation of heavy equipment; environmental regulations related to pesticides; Irrigation concepts; pruning and trimming techniques; and grass varieties and care techniques.
Skilled in supervising and evaluating employees; driving a vehicle; operating heavy equipment; preparing and delivering training programs; reading landscape architecture drawings; choosing appropriate plants and trees; maintaining records of safety data; designing, installing, and maintaining irrigation systems; implementing a landscape plan; using hand and power tools; planting trees and shrubs; overseeing volunteer help; overseeing programs for grass care; transporting and installing landscape materials; applying pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides; using computers and software applications and keeping records; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Hours: Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm Hours and assigned location may vary and are subject to change depending on needs of department.
Must be available for weekend rotation, special events, to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Employment Type: Full-time, non-exempt
Salary Information:
The hiring range
for this position is $51,111 - $69,000 annually
, plus a competitive benefits package.
Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of progressively responsible supervisory, landscaping, irrigation, pesticide application or related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licenses/Certifications

Required:
- Valid Driver's License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
- Pesticide Applicator's License.
Preferred:
- North Carolina Commercial Driver License
- North Carolina Plant Professional Certification
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)
- Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) preferred.
