Overview
Assists in and learns about, or performs general work in the efficient maintenance, repair, and installation of campus heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and equipment. Accomplishes this by applying skills in conjunction with technical knowledge and following instructions and established guidelines. Works as a member of a team under supervision, as needed, on projects or assignments and continually seeks opportunities for education.

If the applicant qualifies as an Apprentice, the applicant will be enrolled into an apprenticeship program and must be willing to complete the classroom trainings and on the job trainings required to complete the apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in or repairs and maintains various parts of the HVAC systems by applying the necessary procedures and skills specialties in refrigeration, air systems, control systems, duct work, heating and cooling systems and general trouble shooting.
  • Assists in or performs duties associated with a variety of new technologies of new installations and retrofits including DDC controls sensors, thermostats, rooftop air handlers, split cooling system and chillers.
  • Accomplishes a variety of HVAC work by pulling control wire, installing controllers, installing duct work and diffusers, repairing heating and cooling coils and DDC valves.
  • Ensures proper care in the use of maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned, such as assisting HVAC technicians with basic assignments.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • To be considered as an HVAC Tech Apprentice: HVAC aptitude required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Universal Refrigeration License.
  • Effective computer skills.
  • Able to read blueprints and schematics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all control systems, equipment and campus facilities.
  • Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and installation techniques common to the HVAC trade.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and associated components.
  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to balance several different types of systems.
  • Skill in the installation, adjustment and repair of HVAC control systems.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and repairing all types of HVAC systems, equipment and elements.
  • Ability to analyze building heating and air conditioning requirements and recommend systems or modifications.
  • Skill in the use of test equipment common to the trade.
  • Knowledge of other crafts and when to use them.
  • Mathematical computation skills.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and applicable software.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Ability to accurately estimate projects and purchase materials.

Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.
