Overview
USU Blanding Campus is accepting applications for counselors/tutors for UB's Summer Program. The 5-week comprehensive program offers assistance to Upward Bound participants. Counselors are required to live in residence hall and will mentor and tutor participants on a daily basis. Room and board will be provided along with a salary of $3500 for the five weeks. Summer employment begins May 25, 2026, and continues through June 19, 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Assist UB participants in improving academic achievement either in a group or individually by meeting with them on a regular basis to complete class assignments and work on study skills.
  • Must be able to tutor participants in English, math, science, PE, and/or Foreign Language.
  • Monitor attendance and academic performance of participants on a daily basis.
  • Enforce the rules and regulations of the USU Blanding Campus including housing and Upward Bound Program.
  • Meet with director, program coordinator, and teachers regularly to ascertain participants' progress and address any concerns.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of enrichment activities.
  • Assist participants with financial aid applications and scholarships for fall semester.
  • Maintain a productive, positive attitude and confidentiality with other counselors, instructors, and UB staff.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Upward Bound Director and Program Coordinator.
  • Must adhere to the USU travel and driving policies


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree or have completed at least 18 credits of college work at time of application.
  • Must have a solid academic background in English, and/or science, math, and/or Foreign Language.
  • Must commit to full-time availability between May 25, 2026, and June 19, 2026. Scheduling and/or commitment conflicts cannot be accommodated.
  • Experience in conducting team building and other group activities.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Must possess the ability to handle high levels of stress.
  • Must have superb analytical, problem solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference to previous summer counselor experience
  • Background similar to TRIO/College Launch participants
  • Bilingual in Navajo

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
