The Marine Services Business Unit is seeking a Boat Cook in Morgan City, LA.

DEA's Marine Services Division is currently seeking a temporary Cook/Deckhand to work aboard an 82ft survey vessel operating in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Must possess a high school diploma/GED; a valid Driver's License; and a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Prior cooking experience and the appropriate State food service certification must be obtained. Prior marine experience is not necessary but recommended for this entry-level position. Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and safety conscious. This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug screening per US Coast Guard regulations.

Work Schedule: This is a temporary position expected to continue through Summer/Fall of 2026. Schedule for this position is typically 10 days of rotating shift work on the vessel followed by 10 days off the vessel. Crew change will take place in Morgan City, LA.

What You'll Do Key Responsibilities:
  • Following Captain's orders
  • Responsible for cooking and food handling in safe, efficient, healthful, and sanitary manner
  • Maintain kitchen and supply room in a sanitary and organized fashion
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, ordering and inventory control
  • Must check quantity and quality of stock received and consumed, and ensure purchase orders are placed in a timely fashion and within budgetary constraints so that ample food is available on board at all times
  • Demonstrate a high standard of personal hygiene
  • Handle problems such as shortage of food items, mistakes, problem in food production or equipment failure
  • Ensure equipment is properly cleaned, stored and waste is handled according to health and safety regulations
  • General maintenance of vessel
  • Line Handling
  • Painting
  • Maintaining cleanliness in living areas
  • Maintaining proper watches (day or night) as described by the Captain
  • Other assorted duties as determined by Captain
What You Bring Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, and safety conscious
  • Prior cooking experience
  • Appropriate State food service certification
  • Ability to be away from home for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work a rotating shift while aboard the vessel
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from crew changes
Physical Requirements:
  • Vision that allows safe maneuvering aboard the vessel in situations that are likely to occur when a boat is in navigation night and day, year around. Depth perception must be adequate for assisting the wheelhouse personnel in navigating in close quarters, including lock or bridge approaches.
  • Ability to work during adverse weather conditions/rough seas onboard a vessel.
  • Ability to climb steep and vertical ladders and enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills.
  • Ability to use emergency equipment located on the vessel.
  • May be required to reach into poorly accessible areas of machinery; troubleshoot equipment that is difficult to reach; work in areas that have high noise levels; work below deck in tight spaces.
  • Lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • It is the responsibility of every DEA crewmember to report to the vessel in a timely manner, fit and ready for duty
