This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.

DESCRIPTION

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all. The School focuses on health, diversity, inclusion, and social equity in everything we do. We believe this starts in the workplace, where we actively strive to ensure a sense of belonging for everyone and honor the idea that through our differences, we are better together. In working to fulfill that vision, we are comprised of more than 125 primary appointed faculty and academics, 150 staff members, and 25 secondary appointed faculty and provide mentorship and instruction to 900+ BSPH undergraduate major students and 225+ postgraduate students across six degree programs as well as a clinical residency. We conduct research and instruction in public health disciplines such as Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services & Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Equity & Justice, Health Policy, Public Mental Health & Substance Use, and Technology & Precision Health, totaling ~$255M in grants and contracts and housing five research service cores. We engage in research and teaching collaborations across the University and the community at-large. Partnerships with the community and with health agencies are fundamental to the School.

The Career Services and Alumni Affairs Specialist is a professional who applies acquired understanding of career development to advise students on a full range of career processes, including individual and group advising, coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies with a focus on the field of Public Health. The incumbent provides a holistic approach to undergraduate and graduate student career counseling, alumni networking and professional development opportunities, develops workshops and presentations as necessary. The role will actively engage alumni to sustain productive relationships for student mentorship, program development, and building ongoing opportunities for alumni to stay connected to the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health.

Reporting to the Education Programs and Student Affairs Manager, the Career Services and Alumni Affairs Specialist performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career readiness workshops, alumni tracking and engagement, and serve as a liaison between employers and alumni to deliver interactive career development programming that integrates industry representatives and the student population. This position will assist with coordinating and delivering events such as networking events, mock interviews, and alumni engagement events. Incumbent must be comfortable creating and maintaining a method for tracking alumni in the School in order to report on hiring trends and other alumni-related data. Call-ins and handoffs to our advancement team as appropriate when identifying individuals or employers interested in supporting the School.

This role supports career development and alumni initiatives, and serves as a primary connection point for employers seeking to recruit talent from our Public Health student and alumni population. That includes maintaining relationships with potential employers, campus partners, and other organizations to meet the career needs of students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four (4) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area.

  • Basic knowledge of relevant policies and regulatory requirements. Basic knowledge of health professions education industry. Basic knowledge of public health programs and career paths for public health students including the structure, dynamics, and current employment trends.

  • Basic knowledge of administrative analysis and operations research. Acquiring skills in developing and implementing processes and systems. Familiarity with the administrative and operational implications in a program.

  • Communication skills; includes verbal, written and active listening. Service oriented and responsive to questions and requests. Ability to interact in a professional, resourceful, and courteous manner. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Experience editing resumes, cover letters and advising others on how to write effective resumes, cover letters, business correspondence, etc. Strong public speaking / presentation skills relevant to demonstrations of interview acumen, presenting to students, School members and other University personnel, and community partners.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to develop working relationships within department and with learners. Ability to work with people from diverse cultures. Experience effectively interacting and advising diverse, multi cultural, domestic and international populations, students, staff, faculty, employers, etc.

  • Excellent organizational skills, analytical, and demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to work with extremely complex faculty calendars / schedules requires extremely well organized and detail oriented precision. Strong database and data-collection skills are required to develop a system of alumni tracking spanning all academic programs in public health.

  • Knowledge of educational technology and systems. Ability to troubleshoot and triages related technology issues.

  • Investigative, data analysis, and reporting skills. Ability to generate computer reports, checking for errors, correcting and submitting accurate reports. Skills include entering, maintaining, extracting, and analyzing data in electronic systems.

  • Experience advising students in the selection of appropriate career goals via exploration of professional interests, skills, expertise, previous employment background, industry job prospects, and local and global employment opportunities. Experience promoting a variety of job search techniques appropriate to career goals; experience researching employment trends in a variety of industries to benefit student job search activities.

  • Experience with programmatic activities related to alumni relations including alumni surveys, social media sites, and newsletters. Experience implementing programs and events based on analysis of data and survey outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussions, interactions and training, using group dynamics theory and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in public health, adult education, or related training.

  • Three (3) years experience in student affairs, public health practice, student careers services, alumni affairs, or related field.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends will be required, such as for engagement events.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,125 - $94,858 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.19 - $45.43

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
