Job Description Summary: The Underwriting Consultant serves as a strategic advisor and subject matter expert on complex underwriting decisions, guiding risk assessment and pricing strategies for Blue KC's large group commercial customers. This role applies advanced underwriting principles to optimize financial outcomes, mitigate risk, while supporting Blue KC corporate objectives across all lines of business. Acting as a key liaison between underwriting, sales, pharmacy, and external stakeholders; the Underwriting Consultant demonstrates comprehensive market & product knowledge to support both renewing and prospective customers' needs.
Job Description
- Provide expert-level consultation on underwriting methodologies, pricing models, and risk assessments for both fully insured and self-insured clients, including stop-loss arrangements. Demonstrate the ability to communicate both the results of underwriting evaluation as well as proposed retention and new sale strategies to internal and external stakeholders.
- Analyze customer claims data, market trends, and other ad-hoc information to refine underwriting approaches and ensure competitive price positioning.
- Collaborate amongst numerous internal stakeholders. This includes close advisement on pharmacy pricing strategy, providing an underwriting perspective on the customer's overall financial dynamics.
- Act as a mentor and knowledge resource for underwriting teams, enhancing technical proficiency and strategic thinking across the department.
- Engage in high-stakes negotiations, influencing pricing recommendations, contractual terms, and financial guarantees with internal and external stakeholders. Engage in broker and/or client-facing meetings, as needed.
- Ensure underwriting decisions adhere to Blue KC corporate policies, regulatory standards, and financial targets.
- Spearhead enhancements to underwriting processes, driving efficiency, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Perform financial settlements, contract execution, and proposal response development to support all areas of Blue KC's business strategies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Business, Mathematics, or Economics
- 7 years of experience in underwriting group insurance including all funding types
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's of business administration
- ASO fee pricing experience
- Stop loss rating experience
