National Grid PPO owns and operates 3,500 megawatts (MW) of steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. PPO is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of these units. PPO is a fully integrated organization with operating and support services capabilities. The Power Engineering Department (PED) within PPO develops engineered solutions for the steam and combustion turbine units and works closely with power plant and support services personnel during the engineering and construction phases of specific projects. The Power Engineering Dept. (PED) is a multi-disciplined team of engineers who are self-directed and empowered to develop and implement solutions on a wide range of PPO and Corporate initiatives. PED Engineers have project ownership from inception through operation. National Grid is hiring a Senior Engineer Reliability for our Power Engineering Dept. This role is located in our Hicksville, NY location and will travel to our other plants Long Island.

Job Purpose

The Senior Reliability Engineer reports to the Reliability Engineering Manager in PED and supports both internal and external team members collaborating on new projects as well as improvements to our existing fleet of steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. This position is responsible for inspecting, evaluating, and designing structural supports for high energy piping and critical fuel piping.

The person in this role will assess and implement upgrades to the existing steam and combustion turbine units as part of the capital improvement and maintenance processes. Project assessments shall include, but are not limited to, performing nondestructive examinations, piping structural analysis, cost/benefit analysis, risk analysis and evaluation overall project performance.

This position will include responsibilities typical of a field engineer, project engineer, project design and project manager responsibilities on projects. The engineer will evaluate all aspects of mechanical assessment, material selection, project design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations for all projects. This role is also responsible for developing specifications, standards and procedures.

Key Accountabilities
  • Reports to the Reliability Engineering Manager of the Power Plant Operations Power Engineering Dept.
  • Perform material and metallurgical root cause failure analysis and formulate corrective actions and repairs.
  • Perform condition assessment inspections of high energy piping, piping supports and boiler components.
  • Perform inspections of fuel oil storage tanks and chemical storage tanks in accordance with applicable codes (e.g., API 653, ASME VIII).
  • Conduct high energy piping surveys, including hot and cold piping and support position assessments.
  • Specify and evaluate nondestructive examination (NDE) requirements and methodologies.
  • For new equipment installations, work closely with plant staff and engineers to establish pipe sizing. piping routing and piping support structures.
  • Perform engineering calculations in accordance with latest codes and industry standards.
  • Develop technical specifications, standards and procedures for engineering projects.
  • Perform field surveys to support design development, project execution, and documentation of as-built conditions.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering.
  • 5 years of related power plant mechanical, materials or equivalent experience in an industrial environment.
  • Experience inspecting piping and structural installation work.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with failure analysis of ferrous and nonferrous materials.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with welding technology and preparing repair welding procedures.
  • Experience working with ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 welding codes.
  • Working knowledge of power station codes and standards, including
    • National Board inspection Code (NBIC)
    • ASME Section I, V, VIII, IX and B31.1
    • API 650, 653.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive examination (NDE) methods.
  • Possession of a NYS Engineer -in-Training (EIT) certificate
  • Energetic, creative and committed to promoting innovative ideas and achieving or exceeding objectives.
  • Self-starter who is comfortable leading and managing project teams.
  • Able to engage and lead others to successful results on projects.
  • Strong analytical and solution-oriented thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects, including high visibility initiatives.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point applications.
  • Effective verbal and written skills.
  • Capable of working in a power plant environment
  • Capable of recognizing hazards, learning and implementing safeguards.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License

Salary

$131,000 - $154,000 a year
