UMKC School of Dentistry is the only public dental school in Missouri. Our alumni account for roughly half of all practicing dentists in Missouri. The Department of Restorative Clinical Sciences encompasses the full scope of general dentistry and predoctoral prosthodontics. The department supports didactic, preclinical, and clinical education in operative dentistry, dental biomaterials, treatment planning, fixed and removable prosthodontics, and comprehensive restorative patient care. Through close integration with predoctoral clinics, the department plays a central role in preparing students to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings.

Job Description

The Director of Digital Dentistry is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Clinical Professor rank. This role supports the School's strategic pillar of fostering a culture of innovation through the evidence-based application of digital technologies to enhance patient care, education, and clinical outcomes.

The Director provides leadership for the Digital Dentistry curriculum and clinical infrastructure, coordinating digital innovation across all academic and clinical programs, including dental hygiene, the pre-doctoral DDS program, and advanced education programs. The position plays a central role in integrating emerging technologies into education, clinical workflows, and laboratory operations while advancing faculty, student, and resident training.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Curriculum Development

  • Lead the vision, development, and implementation of the Digital Dentistry curriculum across pre-doctoral, dental hygiene, and advanced education programs.
  • Collaborate with department chairs, program directors, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to integrate digital technologies cohesively into didactic, preclinical, and clinical curricula.
  • Align digital initiatives with the School's mission, strategic plan, and institutional priorities.
  • Design and implement innovative clinical and educational workflows that enhance efficiency, quality of care, and learner outcomes.

Clinical and Laboratory Operations

  • Oversee a Digital Design Lab supporting clinical, educational, and research activities.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot digital dental laboratory equipment, including CAD/CAM systems, 3D printers, milling units, and related technologies.
  • Perform advanced technical procedures such as CAD/CAM design, 3D printing, milling, sintering, staining, glazing, and custom prosthetic shading.
  • Coordinate vendor service and maintenance agreements and recommend replacement or upgrades of obsolete or non-functional equipment.

Education, Training, and Faculty Development

  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to students, residents, and faculty on digital workflows, laboratory procedures, and design software.
  • Support students in the design, transmission, fabrication, and finishing of digitally produced dental prostheses.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of continuing education and faculty development programs focused on digital dentistry and emerging technologies.
  • Evaluate educational and clinical outcomes related to digital technology implementation and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.

Personnel and Administrative Oversight

  • Participate in the selection, implementation, and integration of new digital technologies for both laboratory and clinical use.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the department and institution.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • DDS or DMD degree, or a foreign equivalent professional dental degree
  • Demonstrated expertise in digital dentistry technologies and workflows and the ability to mentor and instruct faculty and students to use emerging technologies.
  • Strong teaching, organizational, and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to lead innovations in an academic clinical environment.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, and experience. This is a 12-month, benefit-eligible, full-time (1.0) faculty appointment eligible for ranked non-tenure track promotion.
