Urban Forestry Intern

Location: West Allis, WI
Reports To: Forestry and Parks Manager
Type: Internship

What You'll Learn
  • Tree Care & Maintenance: Planting, watering, mulching, pruning, and monitoring tree health.
  • Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Management: Assist with chemical injections and learn pest control strategies.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Prepare reports, maintain records, and analyze urban forestry data.
  • Public Engagement: Communicate with residents about tree care and city programs.
  • Safety & Equipment Use: Operate hand tools and small motorized equipment safely and effectively.
What You Bring
  • Education: Currently enrolled in a two- or four-year college program in arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture, or a related field.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Familiarity with urban forestry programs and plant biology.
    • Ability to identify tree species, pests, and diseases.
    • Strong communication skills-both verbal and written.
    • Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Certifications & Requirements:
    • Valid WI Driver's License and good driving record.
    • State of Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification (Category 3.0 - Turf and Landscape) within 30 days of employment.
  • Physical Ability: Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions and performing heavy manual labor, including lifting, bending, kneeling, and operating equipment.
Additional Details
  • College Transcripts Required: Must be submitted within three business days after the application period closes. Student copies are acceptable.
  • Preferred Experience: Prior related work experience is a plus.
