SUMMARY

Seeking a Summer 2026 Petroleum Engineering/Programming Intern. Opportunity to gain valuable work experience, while contributing to a leading O&G Services Company with a 90 year history.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This internship focuses on modernizing legacy petroleum engineering software tools by combining advanced domain knowledge with strong programming capability. The intern will study and interpret the existing codebase and documentation, validate underlying engineering equations and calculation workflows, and help transform legacy desktop-style tools into modern, web-based applications with a structured, auto-updating database backend.

  • Analyze, document, and understand existing legacy software logic, workflows, and calculation methods.

  • Review documented code and engineering references to verify equations and model assumptions.

  • Translate petroleum engineering models and equations into efficient, production-quality code.

  • Improve numerical stability, performance, and scalability of engineering algorithms.

  • Redesign core tools with a modern web-based user interface.

  • Develop data input/output pipelines for well, reservoir, and completion parameters.

  • Create clear technical documentation covering software architecture, equations, and workflows.

  • Support UI, reporting, and visualization enhancements.

  • Present progress, validation results, and technical findings to engineering and management teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in pursuing a Master's, or PhD degree from an accredited College or University.

  • Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited College or University for the duration of the internship assignment pursuing a degree in Engineering, Science, or Computer Science.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Must be able to work in the city of the posting location without relocation assistance.

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Reservoir engineering fundamentals

    • Hydraulic fracturing and stimulation concepts

    • Production forecasting and decline analysis

    • Rock and fluid properties

  • Demonstrated programming proficiency in at least one of the following:

    • Python

    • MATLAB

    • C++

    • Julia

    • C#

  • Experience implementing numerical methods and engineering calculations in code.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to read, interpret, and refactor legacy or poorly documented codebases.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with fracture modeling or proppant transport modeling, preferred.

  • Familiarity with scientific computing libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, or similar).

  • Experience with web frameworks and modern UI development.

  • Experience with database design and backend development, preferred.

  • Familiarity with data visualization frameworks.

  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices:

    • Version control (Git)

    • Unit testing

    • Code reviews

    • Documentation standards

  • Exposure to reservoir simulation or completion design software.

  • Experience working with large technical datasets, preferred.
