Responsible for the coordination of the department's activities in a specialty area, or multiple patient care units. This may vary by site location. Responsibilities include ensuring adequate staffing assignments, development of collaborative patient care plans, patient/family and staff education, quality assurance monitoring and inter-departmental rounds. Acts as the department's liaison and primary contact for specialty care area or unit. Monitors patient care variances and initiates improvement processes in response to patient safety concerns. Responsible for Respiratory Care operations and staffing. Promotes interdepartmental relations / teamwork through participation in patient care rounds with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, etc. Based on site location, may work as part of staff if necessary. Collaborates on development of patient care plans. This may include patient care variance review and follow-up. Participation /membership on unit specific patient care or QA committees and process improvement initiatives (hospital-wide committees when appropriate). Assists in interviewing, responsible for orientation of new hires. Evaluates respiratory staff development through department specific check offs. Provide in service/education for nursing and resident physicians upon request. Provides direct patient/family education. May serve as a clinical instructor for respiratory therapy students. Provides investigation and follow-up on safety pause events. Participates in ongoing growth and development which may include personal competencies through classes, seminar attendance, literature reviews; assists with policy and procedure development and review.
