Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Husbandry Supervisor for Rutgers Animal Care within the Office for Research. The Office for Research's mission is to support the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of all Rutgers faculty. The Office accomplishes its mission by convening with academic and research leaders, providing integrated, user-focused resources, services, and tools, and partnering with faculty. As part of the Office for Research, shares responsibility for oversight of the day-to-day operation of a centralized animal care program. Rutgers Animal Care ( RUAC) provides animal husbandry and veterinary services in support of faculty who use vertebrate animals for research and teaching. RUAC provides services in numerous vivaria with a staff of 40+ full-time laboratory animal care technicians (LACTs) and some part-time personnel.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Supervises, plans, coordinates and performs the complex operations required in the care and use of laboratory animals housed in numerous animal facilities.
  • Provides 'on-the-floor' supervision of all animal care activities to include feeding, watering, sanitation, and veterinary treatment if required by a veterinarian.
  • Ensures the care and use of laboratory animals are be performed in accordance with the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the USDA Animal Welfare Act.
  • Supervises and trains employees and assists in the hiring of employees.
  • Plans vacation, holiday and weekend schedules and handles the preparation of hours worked for timesheet submission.
  • Prepares requisitions and works with the AD in the plans for repair and upgrade of the laboratory animal facilities.
  • Works with the AD as an independent 'hands-on' supervisor in performance of duties.
  • Works with and alongside subordinate animal care staff and students, leading by example. Completes work independently, with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results.
  • Orders supplies and interface with suppliers.
  • Communicates changes within vivarium in a timely manner to leadership, staff and faculty.
  • Ensures preventive maintenance of equipment is performed and repairs are scheduled when needed.
  • Provides animal husbandry in absence of LACTs as needed.
  • Ensures cleanliness of facilities, cages, equipment, and departmental vehicles.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree or comparable combination of education and relevant experience and five or more years of experience in the field of laboratory animal science.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) level from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with subordinates and superiors and to promote teamwork.
  • Familiar with PC, spreadsheets, word processing systems and other office technology.
  • Knowledge of industry specific regulations (e.g. cage site requirements for various species), procedures (e.g. sterile technique for cage changing, sanitation of rooms and equipment) and equipment (bottlewashers, cagewashes, autoclave).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience with a diverse group of people in an animal facility setting.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science.
  • Experience with developing Standard Operating Procedures and training staff.
  • Veterinary technician/technologist/assistant training, experience and/or certification.

  • CMAR and/or ILAM certification.

Equipment Utilized

  • Cage wash equipment such as rack washers, tunnel washers, bulk sterilizers, bedding dump and fill stations, bottle washers and fillers, Edstrom RO systems, autoclave, pallet jack, caging systems, safety systems.
  • Departmental vehicles including car/van/box truck.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to enter vivaria and colony rooms and handle various species of animals on a daily basis.

Special Conditions

  • Must pass pre-employment and periodic physical examinations.
  • This position requires participation in the occupational health program for animal workers.
  • Regular workweek may include weekends and/or evening shift work.
  • Clean Driving Record.
