Clinical Informatics Intern

The Clinical Informatics Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the coordination, integration, and analysis of clinical processes across Cone Health using clinical information technology, workflow design, and evidence-based practices. This internship provides exposure to healthcare technology systems, quality improvement initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient care, safety, and operational effectiveness.
The intern will collaborate with clinical, operational, and IT teams to support projects that improve the care experience for patients, providers, and team members.

This internship position is a time-limited, temporary position with a start date and orientation on Monday, June 1, 2026. The total number of hours that an intern can work during this timeframe is 250 hours.

Interns hired for the summer cohort will be enrolled in Campus Greensboro's Summer Fellows Program. This is an in-person, professional development training program sponsored by Cone Health.

To be considered, candidates must meet at least one of the below criteria:

Local College Students: Attendees of local institutions including University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Guilford College, Greensboro College, Guilford Technical Community College, Bennett College, Elon University and School of Law, North Carolina A&T State University.

Guilford County High School Graduates: Those who graduated from Guilford County high schools and are now furthering their education outside of Greensboro.

First Generation College Students: Students who are the first in their families to attend any college or university.

Essential Internship Responsibilities

  • Support informatics initiatives within a designated department or service line.
  • Assist with adoption and optimization of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
  • Participate in workflow analysis, process mapping, and documentation of clinical requirements.
  • Assist in translating clinical needs into functional specifications for IT teams.
  • Observe and contribute to clinical and operational improvement meetings and governance processes.
  • Support safety initiatives and learn risk-mitigation practices within healthcare technology systems.
  • Assist in maintaining knowledge base articles, training materials, and procedural documentation.
  • Shadow informatics professionals serving as liaisons between clinicians and information systems leadership.
  • Contribute to change management efforts and assist with educational content development and training support.
  • Participate in quality improvement or IT methodology initiatives (e.g., Agile, LEAN).
  • Perform other learning-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Education

  • Required: Must be in process of a college-level degree in a related field and a student in good standing.Applicants must be at least the age of 16 to be employed as Cone Health High School-level interns (work-authorization required).
  • Master's level students preferred, particularly those pursuing degrees in:
    • Healthcare Administration
    • Health Informatics
    • Public Health
    • Nursing
    • Healthcare Management
    • Business Administration (MBA with healthcare focus)
    • Information Systems or related technical fields
  • Undergraduate students may be considered if they are classified asJunior or Senior.
  • Majors may include healthcare professions, technical degrees, business, information systems, or related disciplines.

Experience

    Preferred:
    • Past or current clinical experience is highly desirable.
    • Academic, practicum, research, or project experience involving healthcare systems, EMRs, data analysis, or workflow improvement.
    • Foundational awareness of healthcare regulations such as HIPAA and patient privacy standards.
    • Exposure to quality improvement or project management methodologies (Agile, LEAN, ITIL) through coursework or projects.
    • No prior full-time professional experience required.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Foundational understanding of healthcare operations and clinical workflows.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
    • Organizational and time management skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar productivity tools.
    • Interest in healthcare IT systems, data systems, and informatics practices.
