Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on activities related to the support services functions, such as dietary and food services, environmental services, general facilities, repair and maintenance, parking, sterilization and transportation to ensure all required support activities are completed in a timely manner and meet the organization's quality standards and expectations. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Sterilization Services duties: Maintains sterile equipment, assembles medical equipment, maintains inventory, orders supplies, and provides life-saving instruments to those performing medical procedures. A clinical technologist role that has specialized knowledge or skills gained through a combination of vocational education, training, and experience. This role will be most commonly applied to patient care and/or scientific/laboratory jobs. An entry-level role typically requiring little to no prior knowledge or experience and requiring vocational or technical education. Work is routine or follows standard procedures, is closely supervised, and communicates information that requires little explanation or interpretation.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for managing the accuracy and completion of case carts using the Operating Room (OR) schedule and the OR manager system, Meditech. Reviews the cases for the next day, picks supplies as assigned, and ensures each case cart is complete and accurate resolving any discrepancies with the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager and the Central Processing Department (CPD) Manager. Responsible for the instrument tracking system and will update preference cards, location labels, kit labels, and making count sheet edits as necessary in the instrument tracking system. In addition, this position will be the liaison between the OR team and CPD, facilitating the flow of instrumentation and equipment to ensure that the team in the OR has the resources required to ensure OR efficiency.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Completion of a certified program in Central Processing.

3. Central Services Technician National Certification (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

4. Three (3) years of CPD, OR, or supply chain experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Five (5) years of CPD, OR, or supply chain experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Reviews OR schedule for next day and picks all assigned supplies and instruments required for next day cases.

2. Facilitates case cart preparation for all add-on cases and communicates with the OR team regarding any equipment or instrument conflicts.

3. Throughout the day, proactively calls for subsequent case carts for each room, ensuring the case cart for the next scheduled case is ready, complete and available in the OR.

4. Facilitates the flow of completed case carts back to sterile processing in a timely manner.

5. At end of shift, ensures that all case cart for first cases for next day are in the OR and complete.

6. Collects data and provides guidance on the best location for supplies and instrumentation to ensure efficient flow of cases throughout the day.

7. Develops a daily accurate turnover kit list and facilitates the timely return of instrumentation to CPD and back to the OR.

8. Maintains collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment.

9. Leads by example.

10. Communicates OR needs effectively to central sterile processing supervisors and staff and initiates communication with OR to update and confirm changes in the surgery schedule.

11. Stays abreast of changes in OR schedule and adapts workflow accordingly.

12. Sets priorities and realistic timeline for processing and decontamination to ensure timely delivery of instrumentation for same day and next day surgeries.

13. Collaborates with surgeons, OR nurses and technicians regarding changes in technology, instrumentation and product and instrument requests.

14. Documents in CPD communication book/board and CPD shift reports to exchange information regarding changes and updates.

15. Makes necessary changes to kit count sheets and case pick preference cards as needed; Prints kit scan labels and location scan labels as needed.

16. Adds picked items to the case cart picked in CPD and confirms that case carts are accurate and complete, based on preference card.

17. Works both collaboratively and professionally with the OR and sterile processing team members.

18. Inspires staff through encouragement and positive teaching experiences.

Physical Requirements:

1. Frequently required to lift, reach, carry, push and pull 40-50 lbs or more.

2. Stand/sit combination of eight (8) hours or length of assignment.

2. Noting attributes of objects such as size, temperature, or texture by touching with fingertips.

4. Hearing spoken words to communication oral information to customers accurately, quickly, and loudly enough in the English language.

5. Perceiving sounds such as phones ringing, beepers, alarms and buzzers on equipment.

6. Clarity of both near and far vision.

7. Ability to distinguish color, i.e. alarms and buzzers on equipment, and color codes on instrumentation.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Efficient in the operation of all equipment within the department.

2. Knowledgeable with general and specialty instrumentation.

3. Ability to listen to instruction and translate it into an activity and reproduce what is taught.

4. Ability to be extremely conscientious with regard to procedures.

5. Ability to follow guidelines, refraining from short cuts where technique is involved.

6. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks and handle changing environment and assignments.

7. Ability to speak and hear effectively and meet telephone and customer service standards.

8. Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office and Instrument Tracking systems.

9. Knowledge of the hospital, infection control, and medical terminology.
