As the Senior Director of Care Value at Optum, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare economics through innovative strategies and insights. This position is designed for a leader who can develop the Medical Spend Insights capability, which aims to uncover the root causes and drivers of medical costs. You will lead research projects and conduct ad hoc analyses that support various affordability initiatives, ensuring that the organization can effectively address key affordability concerns. Your ability to generate affordability research and analysis will be crucial in identifying trending areas and root causes, which will be developed into actionable affordability content. In this role, you will be responsible for building and nurturing relationships across finance and affordability teams within Optum. This collaboration will be essential for understanding key affordability concerns and managing areas of unmanaged spend. You will also work closely with various partners to size projects and establish the financial value of new affordability and innovation solutions. Your leadership will extend to managing a team of Associate Directors, Care Value Optimization Consultants and analysts, focusing on their development and the production of insights and data. You will provide mentoring, technical guidance, and direction to your team, establishing best practices and processes that enhance productivity and effectiveness.

The Senior Director of Care Value reports to the VP, Care Value & Medical Management MidAmerica. This is a remote position, and candidates may reside anywhere in the United States. The role requires approximately 25% field-based travel, including occasional overnight stays. Travel is typically planned and aligned to business needs for purposes of operational collaboration and relationship management. The position involves frequent face-to-face engagement with local network medical practices within assigned markets, and the individual must be able to meet all travel requirements of the role.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Generate and develop Medical Spend insights that uncover the root causes and drivers of medical costs, and effectiveness and impact of affordability initiatives
  • Lead research projects and ad hoc analyses in support of affordability projects
  • Develop relationships across finance and affordability teams to understand key affordability concerns for research, and collaborate on areas of unmanaged spend
  • Cross functional collaboration with clinical & HCE partners to size projects and establish financial value for new affordability and innovation solutions
  • Coordinate with analytic engineering and data teams for data acquisition, analysis, summarization, visualization and trend identification for large medical spend insight projects
  • Manage the affordability team with focus on teammate development and production of insights as well as data, providing mentoring, leadership, technical guidance and direction to analysts
  • Establish technical best practices and processes for team
  • Affordability and Actuarial Processes: Lead efforts to enhance affordability and actuarial methodologies and alignment with overall business strategy and regulatory requirements
  • Operational Excellence: Foster a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging data and analytics to drive operational efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align strategic priorities and drive transformational change
  • Collaborate with Optum leaders, peers, health plan leadership, and business partners to drive overall operational performance, valued consumer experience, and transformation.
  • Proactively monitor operation consumers, initiating and driving appropriate changes in processes, tools, and capabilities that increase operational efficiency and effectiveness while concurrently improving consumer experience and complying with regulatory requirements
  • Determine and achieve key performance metrics, including patient satisfaction, quality, compliance, teammate engagement, and financial objectives
  • Communicate and reinforce a clear set of objectives and performance expectations ensuring linkage to Optum's mission, strategy, and business plans
  • Build and foster relationships within a matrix organizational structure to proactively resolve issues, drive efficiencies, and champion the consumer value strategy
  • Lead and develop a high-performance, consumer-centric leadership team and workforce. Inspire and motivate teammates to deliver compassionate, efficient, and effective service. Foster a culture of accountability that emphasizes coaching and development, teammate engagement, and performance

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of leadership experience within the health insurance/care industry
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to align strategic priorities and drive transformational change
  • Experience with Affordability and Actuarial Processes; experience leading efforts to enhance affordability and actuarial methodologies, ensuring alignment with overall business strategy and regulatory requirements
  • Proven experience in trend management
  • Solid analytical capabilities and proven ability to drive change and results

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $134,600 to $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
