Overview

Job Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Shared Services (ESS) Manager, individual must be able to program, assemble, and assist in the building of engineering models and prototypes, including performing rework to manufactured components as needed. Individual shall work in close coordination with the Model Shop Supervisor. The individual shall be able to operate all Model Shop equipment including equipment set-up and programming required for end-to-end fabrication of a variety of high-precision components, test fixtures, and speciality tools or jigs. Individual shall lead model shop CNC-Machine activities, oversee shop tools and equipment, and support calibration and procurement activities as required. Individual may need to consult with engineering regarding DMF/DFA activities, review 3d CAD models, and participate in general problem-solving as it pertains to prototyping and fabrication. Individual may be required to perform the proxy duties for the Model Ship Supervisor when he/she is absent.

Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities

  • Shall consult on and review engineering prototypes for DFM/A, machine capabilities, finishes and secondary operations, tolerancing, and production readiness
  • Shall inspect finish work and confirm adherence to specified tolerance requirements.
  • May assist/advise engineers in assembling parts according to design layouts and instructions, troubleshooting, and when designs need reworking
  • May participate in technical meetings and discussions to recommend design variations and consults on troubleshooting around problem areas
  • May participate and provide input in the testing of early instrument modules
  • Shall research and maintain materials, tooling, and machine ship techniques, and submit purchase requests for the model shop
  • Shall be able to design and create 3D models for shop fixtures and tooling. Experience with CREO preferred
  • Provide input on the budget needed for new machinery, tooling, software, repairs, and general shop operations
  • Shall maintain tooling inventory and keep tools and equipment according to machine-shop best practices and Werfen SOPs (as applicable).
  • Shall adhere to all shop safety requirements and Werfen SOPs (as applicable).

  • Will interface with groups across the organization
Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge & Experience for the position:

  • A minimum of 7 years demonstrated experience supervising or leading diverse machine shop operations. CPGMM Master Cam Certification strongly desired
  • Formal education or equivalent combination of education and experience as a Machinist with 10 years of hands-on experience
  • Experience working in an R&D environment is highly desired

Skills & Capabilities

  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and select optimum tools and processes according to required precision levels
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workflow as needed
  • Fluent in programming Mastercam Lathe/Mill 3D printer software, and Waterjet software
  • Fluent in Fanuc and G-Code code writing, interpretation, and manipulation
  • Expert with 2-Axis Lathe, 3-Axis Machining, 6-7 Axis Mill Turn Machining
  • Knowledge of Tig Welding, 3D printing, waterjet, and sheet metal forming
  • Knowledge of current technologies needed for importing CAD files for conversion to CNC programs, organization systems, and long-term storage to preserve specialty processes and techniques unique to components created at Instrumentation Laboratories

Travel Requirements

Local travel, less than 10% of the time.
