JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Billing & Collections is a strategic leader responsible for shaping and advancing the U.S. operations related to billing and collections for funded revenue. This role drives automation, digital transformation, and scalable processes, ensuring the function is future-ready and aligned with the organization's long-term vision. The Director leads innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement, playing a critical role in optimizing the revenue cycle, accelerating cash flow, and supporting the company's financial health. In addition to strategic leadership, the Director is expected to maintain the ability and willingness to work operationally at a detailed level when needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership & Transformation:

  • Develop and execute a forward-looking strategy for billing and collections, with a strong emphasis on automation, digitalization, and process innovation.

  • Align the function with broader organizational goals and financial targets.

  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships to drive enterprise-wide transformation initiatives.

  • Act as a change agent by inspiring, coaching, and empowering teams to embrace new technologies, foster continuous improvement, agility, and high performance.

  • Demonstrate a strong ability to work operationally, engaging directly in detailed billing and collections processes when required to resolve issues, drive improvements, or support the team.

  • Develop future leaders within the team through mentoring and succession planning.

Automation & Digitalization:

  • Lead the identification, evaluation, and implementation of advanced automation solutions to streamline scalable billing and collections processes.

  • Collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of new technologies and systems.

  • Continuously scan the market for emerging tools and best practices to keep the function at the forefront of industry innovation.

Data & Performance Management:

  • Establish and enhance dashboards, KPIs, and analytics to enable proactive, data-driven decision-making.

  • Leverage advanced analytics to identify trends, predict risks, and uncover opportunities for process optimization.

  • Promote a culture where decisions are grounded in data and measurable outcomes.

Scalability and Operational Excellence:

  • Design and implement scalable processes and systems that support business growth and operational efficiency.

  • Drive standardization and simplification across all billing and collections activities.

Compliance, Regulation & Risk Management:

  • Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and payer-specific regulations.

  • Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to receivables, cash flow, and audit exposure.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of DME billing regulations and funding criteria, and ensure the team is trained accordingly.

Reporting & Strategic Insights:

  • Deliver insightful reports and recommendations to senior management, highlighting key trends, risks, and opportunities.

  • Translate complex data into actionable strategies that support the company's financial and operational objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to drive alignment and shared success.

  • Represent the function in strategic projects, cross-functional initiatives, and external forums as needed.

Perform various other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Health Administration, Healthcare management, or related field.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in medical billing and collections, with at least 7 years in a leadership role.

  • Demonstrated success in leading system implementations and automation projects.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and data analytics tools.

  • Extensive knowledge of DME billing and third-party payer regulations.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:

  • Certifications in Revenue Cycle/Billing/Medical reimbursement and Coding, preferred.

COMMUNICATION & LEADERSHIP:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing teams in a dynamic environment.

  • Skilled in navigating complex interpersonal dynamics with empathy and professionalism.

  • Strategic mindset with passion for innovation and continuous improvement.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Experience working with advanced collections and billing systems, ERP systems and CRM platforms.

  • Ability to evaluate and select appropriate billing systems that align with our organizational needs.

  • Experience from implementing and changing Medical billing system.

  • Knowledge of various billing systems used in the US for Durable Medical Equipment (DME).

  • Ability to partner with IT department to drive technological improvements and automation.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills

  • Proven ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational involvement.

  • Results-oriented, with a proven track record of delivering measurable improvements.

  • Deep understanding of compliance and regulatory requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit at a desk for a prolonged period of time

  • Ability to work with interruptions in a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment.

  • Hybrid workspace, in office majority of time

  • Travel to corporate headquarters in Sweden up to 2 times a year
