Position Summary Information






Primary Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director, Director of the PHCC, This position provides chairside assistance, clinical instruction in four-handed dentistry, sterilization and infection control, radiographic procedures, patient care support, outreach coordination, and administrative functions within the pediatric dental clinic.
Essential Functions
Clinical Instruction & Student Training

  • Demonstrate and instruct concepts of four-handed dentistry in all clinical settings.
  • Teach and reinforce principles related to ergonomics, injury prevention, instrument transfer, dental team positioning, infection control, and communication.
  • Train students in electronic health record use, treatment plans, and preventive instruction.
  • Evaluate and grade student preparedness and proficiency with patients.
  • Conduct clinic orientations.
  • Assist in staff training.


Clinical & Chairside Support

  • Perform four-handed chairside assisting for all dental procedures.
  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain operatories.
  • Take radiographs.
  • Provide post-treatment instructions and escort patients.
  • Monitor infection control compliance.
  • Assist with special needs and medically compromised patients.
  • Support patient restraint.

Other Duties

  • Assist with organization of mobile dental clinic, and be willing to share duties with the mobile dental clinic and PHCC.
  • Apply sound judgment in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Assistant Professor/Assistant Director, PHCC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years chairside dental assisting.
  • Current RDA license.
  • Current California X-ray license.
  • Current CPR certification.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of:

  • Scheduling and care coordination in an inter-disciplinary environment.
  • Dental terminology and treatments.
  • Chairside dental assisting.
  • Sterilization and infection control procedures.
  • Medical emergency procedures, including CPR.
  • General office administration methods.


Experience:
  • Pediatric chairside dental assisting.
Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and patients, including children and families.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Effectively assist staff and faculty.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Apply patient management and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work independently or as part of a team.
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin).
  • Recognize and set-up dental instruments.
  • Perform chairside assisting duties in all assigned roles.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Utilize computer/scanner to employ bar coding system.
  • Utilize a clinic management system.
  • Maintain and utilize equipment, instruments, and supplies.

  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

  • Position requires standing during the majority of working hours; occasional reaching and bending.
  • Frequent handling of instruments requires incumbent to possess sufficient motor function to execute movements essential to providing oral health care to patients.
  • Occasional computer and telephone use.
  • Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using a computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.


Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours, overtime may be necessary based on business needs.
Hiring Range $34.25 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
