Essential Job Duties
Join NC State's Utilities and Engineering Department, where your expertise helps power a thriving campus community. We're seeking a dedicated and skilled Utilities Line Technician II to help maintain and enhance the University's electrical power system, supporting over 2,000 acres of facilities, classrooms, and research spaces.
In this role, you'll play a vital part in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient power distribution across all NC State campuses. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Construct, operate, maintain, and repair the university's electrical power systems, including both underground and overhead lines.

  • Perform scheduled preventative and predictive maintenance on electrical systems and facilities across all campuses (North, South, Central, CVM, Arboretum, Stadium, and Centennial).
  • Operate, maintain, and repair campus emergency generators.
  • Maintain and repair campus street and area lighting systems.

  • Construct and install power system components, equipment, and facilities to deliver electric service to new and existing buildings.
  • Inspect systems to determine maintenance needs and establish repair priorities.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues using diagnostic instruments, including Fluke meters, voltmeters, and power meters, as well as computer tracking software.
  • Identify and mitigate safety hazards related to electric shock, falls, burns, and chemical exposure.
  • Plan and execute daily work activities efficiently to meet department objectives.
  • Operate specialized equipment, including a line truck, as required.
  • Collaborate with other power distribution electricians and escalate complex issues to a supervisor or team lead as needed.
  • Lift and transport materials weighing up to 90 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations and perform a wide range of physically demanding tasks in diverse outdoor environments, ensuring safe handling practices and maintaining productivity in varying weather and terrain conditions.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Maintains required certification(s).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of underground and overhead electrical power distribution systems in a utility, commercial, industrial, or campus environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical safety practices and procedures, including hazard recognition, lockout/tagout, fall protection, and safe operation around energized equipment.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical systems using diagnostic tools such as voltmeters, power meters, and computerized maintenance or tracking systems.
  • Experience operating specialized utility equipment, such as line trucks, lifts, or related power distribution equipment, in compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute work independently and as part of a team, with clear communication and coordination to meet operational and emergency response needs.
