Overview

Provides pulmonary function services and respiratory care for patients under the direction of a physician.
Qualifications

Certifications: Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) within 6 months - Peoria Only - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA); Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), Education: Associate's Degree (Required), Work Experience: Pulmonary; Cardiovascular
Responsibilities

DEMONSTRATES CLINICAL COMPETENCY AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE DELIVERY OF PULMONARY FUNCTION DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND ADMINISTRATION OF PATIENT RESPIRATORY INTERVENTIONS.

  • Interprets and executes physician orders
  • Demonstrates the ability to individualize therapy to meet the patient's need
  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate the patient needs
  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgment, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Performs patient education
  • Performs all duties in an efficient and timely manner
  • Notifies leader of respiratory care, nursing supervisor, or unit leader of any inappropriate patient care issues
  • Documents all medication and patient care errors
  • Uses protective equipment appropriately
  • Assesses needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
  • Practices good body mechanics, getting assistance as needed to protect patient and own safety
  • Remains alert and responsive to all alarms/call lights
  • Follows proper hand washing and infection control between patients and procedures
  • Performs testing in a manner that ensures accurate results.
  • Maintains a clean work area, checks and stocks supplies in their specific area.
  • Responds to all pages and requests in a timely manner
  • Delivers high quality care utilizing pulmonary function and respiratory care process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required
  • Remains calm and effective in emergency and/or stressful situations
  • Ensures patient safety in the hospital environment by following policy/procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals
  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.
  • Performs patient bedside lab testing (ABGs), pulse oximetry testing to include rest and exercise oximetry and/or 6 minute walks.
  • Administers aerosolized medication on an as needed basis
  • Calibrates and maintains pulmonary function equipment.
  • Performs all respiratory mechanics including muscle strength maneuvers as prescribed by physician.


COORDINATES THE SCHEDULE FOR THE PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTING LAB AT BOTH CAMPUSES.

  • Ensures that there is proper staff coverage all times for the PFT Lab.
  • Responds promptly to urgent needs


ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS/HER ONGOING PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Learns the functions of all new equipment
  • Learns new procedures
  • Maintains knowledgeable of departmental policies and procedures
  • Completes all mandatory education within the stated timeframe
  • Attends educational offerings to validate skills
  • Assists in the training of Pulmonary Function personnel, including helping with the orientation, competency testing and presenting lectures as needed.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all equipment
  • Maintains current license
  • Maintains current credentials
  • Acts as a resource person for others in performing bedside spirometry testing
  • Participates in clinical instruction of students and other healthcare workers


MAINTAINS ACCURATE DOCUMENTATION AND ACCURATE COMPUTER ENTRY

  • Completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
  • Audits patient records to ensure accuracy of patient care documentation and associated billing.
  • Audits the correct oxygen charges.
  • Documents on all diagnostic tests accurately

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $29.78per hour - $51.22per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
