We're partnering with a growing, multi-entity organization in a highly regulated Consumer Packaged Goods environment (food & beverage, nutrition, dietary supplements) to hire a hands-on Controller. This is a critical leadership role for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in the details, owns the numbers, and brings structure, discipline, and visibility to the financial function.

This role is not purely strategic-it requires active involvement in day-to-day accounting while building scalable processes, enforcing strong controls, and delivering accurate, timely financial reporting to leadership.

What You'll Do
Accounting Operations & Close Management

  • Own the full accounting function, including general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close

  • Lead timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close across multiple entities and states

  • Review and approve account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules

  • Establish, maintain, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare and review consolidated financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow)

  • Deliver variance analysis and actionable financial insights to executive leadership

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning

  • Ensure financial data is accurate, consistent, and decision-ready

Compliance, Tax & Audit Support

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (including California requirements)

  • Oversee coordination of sales/use tax, payroll tax, and multi-state compliance

  • Partner with external auditors, tax advisors, and accounting firms

  • Prepare audit schedules, documentation, and support regulatory reviews

Payroll, Benefits & Intercompany Oversight

  • Oversee payroll accounting, accruals, and reconciliations in partnership with HR and Payroll

  • Ensure accurate accounting for benefits, workers' compensation, and employer taxes

  • Manage intercompany transactions, allocations, and eliminations

Systems, Controls & Process Improvement

  • Own and optimize accounting systems and workflows (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar)

  • Identify inefficiencies and implement scalable, growth-ready processes

  • Strengthen internal controls to support audit readiness and risk mitigation

  • Maintain clear documentation and SOPs

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff

  • Partner cross-functionally with HR, Operations, Legal, and Executive teams

  • Serve as the primary accounting point of contact for leadership

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications

  • CPA or CMA designation

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or Assistant Controller responsibilities

  • Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting

  • Proven experience managing month-end close and multi-entity accounting

  • Background in multi-state, high-growth, or regulated environments

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience supporting audits and working with external accounting firms

  • Industry experience in CPG, food & beverage, nutrition, dietary supplements, cannabis, hemp, or other regulated industries

Skills & Attributes

  • High attention to detail with strong organizational discipline

  • Hands-on leadership style-comfortable balancing execution and oversight

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Clear communicator who can translate financial data for non-finance stakeholders

  • Thrives in fast-paced, evolving environments

What Success Looks Like

  • Timely, accurate, and clean monthly financials

  • Clear visibility into cash flow, liabilities, and intercompany activity

  • Strong internal controls and audit readiness

  • Scalable accounting processes that support continued growth
