How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. The Senior Manager, Construction - Xcel provides strategic and operational leadership for the Open Shop (Xcel) construction organization supporting SPX Cooling Tech's Field Erected Products business. This role is fully accountable for construction performance from project pursuit through execution and closeout, ensuring safe, predictable, and profitable delivery of new and refurbished cooling tower projects. The Sr Manager partners closely with Sales, Engineering, Estimating, Supply Chain, and Proposal Management to align construction strategy, labor plans, schedules, cost assumptions, and risk mitigation during bidding and pre-construction, ensuring commitments made during pursuit are successfully executed in the field.

The role drives operational excellence by maintaining accountability for safety, labor productivity, schedule adherence, cost control, and margin performance, while promoting Lean principles and continuous improvement. A key focus is building and developing a high-performing construction leadership team and fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration. The ideal candidate brings significant industrial construction leadership experience-preferably within field-erected cooling towers-and the business judgment required to deliver results in a dynamic, customer-focused environment.

This role encourages innovation and continuously improves efficiency of technical support, monitors advances of technology and competition, and supports global and acquisition-related technical issues in areas of expertise.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Operational Leadership
  • Lead and oversee all construction activities within the assigned organization - Xcel.
  • Ensure consistent execution of construction projects in alignment with approved scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
  • Support estimating, project development, and bid review processes to ensure competitive and accurate proposals.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Oversee construction yard operations, equipment utilization, and material management.
  1. Safety & Compliance
  • Establish and enforce a strong safety culture across all construction operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable labor agreements.
  • Address and resolve safety incidents and implement corrective actions as needed.
  1. Financial & Business Management
  • Own and manage construction cost center budgets.
  • Drive profitability through labor productivity, cost controls, and effective resource planning.
  • Maintain visibility into job costs, forecast accuracy, and budget-to-plan performance.
  1. People Leadership & Labor Relations
  • Lead, develop, and mentor construction managers and other direct reports.
  • Support workforce planning, talent development, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Open Shop Construction (Xcel)
    • Ensure compliance with applicable labor laws and company employment practices.
    • Support workforce development strategies aligned with open shop operations.
  1. Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with owners, customers, and internal partners.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Represent the construction organization professionally in customer-facing and internal forums.

What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience & Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in the construction industry or a related field, including 5+ years in a supervisory and project management capacity
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and multi-tasking skills with the ability to manage a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; working knowledge of Project, Access, and SAP preferred
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Formal exposure to Lean construction or continuous improvement methodologies
  • Experience leading field-based construction operations and managing complex project schedules
  • Familiarity with ERP systems, including SAP
  • Experience working in industrial or heavy construction environments, preferably including field-erected structures

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (construction management, engineering, business, or related field)
  • Lean or project management-related training or certification preferred

Travel & Working Environment

  • Extensive air and automobile travel required, with frequent onsite presence at construction job sites
  • Combination of office and field environments; may be exposed to varying noise levels, weather conditions, heat, and outdoor elements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, type, and read from computer screens and paper documents
  • Ability to communicate effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced setting
