Hourly Pay Range:

$68.79 - $96.30 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights:

  • Full Time/Part Time: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
  • Hours: Monday - Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

A Brief Overview:
The Advanced Practice Provider - Lead - Surgical Specialty II PA Hospital-Based has 24-hour accountability and responsibility for the operations of the hospital based employed surgical PAs on their team. The position is responsible for leading the clinical and business operations of the hospital based employed Surgical PAs. Primary areas of focus include efficiency and productivity, budget management, staffing, event/quality review, PA professional practice, human resource management, regulatory compliance, employee engagement, customer loyalty. She/he is also responsible for collaborating with physicians and administration to achieve quality goals, financial goals, and patient experience goals. This position is approximately 80% clinical and 20% administrative.

  • Ongoing growth and development from participation in events such as workshops, in-service programs and department meetings.
  • Knowledge and demonstration of NorthShore customer service and Service Values standards.
  • Knowledge of ARC-PA Standards for PA Student Clinical Rotations.
  • Interviews and selects personnel for hire.
  • Implements the performance management program in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Maintains department stability by analyzing staff retention and turnover data, developing appropriate action plans when needed.
  • Leads, facilitates, coaches, and mentors staff and direct reports for development and growth.
  • Accountable for the delivery of high-quality patient care by the PAs.
  • Presents changes and innovations in a positive manner to staff.
  • Identifies patterns and trends relating to staff performance and communicates concerns proactively with management in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Responsible for the efficiency and productivity of PAs at her/his respective hospital(s).
  • Ensures the team is operating efficiently by leveraging data.
  • Supports and coordinates facility moves and improvements.
  • Establishes relationships with physicians and physician leaders to facilitate partnerships with the PAs.
  • Establishes relationships with Inpatient nurse managers, OR leadership, and ED leadership to facilitate partnerships with the PAs.
  • Ensures compliance with financial goals through development of budgets, routine monitoring of results, and variance analyses.
  • Coordinate with the PA Director and Managers to establish staffing plans based on patient census and acuity.
  • Evaluates and manages employee expense and utilization of resources as it relates to patient acuity and intensity of service required for quality PA care for applicable units/departments.
  • Evaluate need for resource team, added shift, and moonlighters by specialty. And make hiring decisions accordingly.
  • Responsible for timely submission of billing charges and reporting on revenue.
  • Implements programs which will generate revenue or decrease cost while maintaining and/or improving quality.
  • Collaborates with the PA Director and Managers, physicians, and PA's to support strategic and operational goals.
  • Interacts with hospital leadership to coordinate continuum of care programs and service development issues.
  • As directed by the Director and Managers, Surgical PAs, participates on various committee's such as Care Huddles, Communication task forces, etc.
  • Mentors and develops team-members.
  • Provides on-going assessment of professional growth and the level of development of each team member through observation, evaluation, counseling, problem-solving, and emotional and situational support to increase retention and decrease turnover.
  • Ensures established policies, procedures, and/or guidelines reflect evidenced based/best practice.
  • Ensures new and/or revised policies/procedures are executed.
  • Analyzes quality data. Evaluates action plans related to performance improvement activities to achieve established goals for performance.
  • Ensures the PA team supports physician, employee, and patient loyalty.
  • Ensures that personnel are aware of their responsibility to maintaining safety.
  • Ensures that a culture of safety exists and there is a mutual trust in which all staff members can speak freely about safety problems and how to solve them without fear of retaliation.
  • Ensures all patient care is in compliance with Physician Assistant standards.
  • Ensures the department is Joint Commission ready (High Reliability).
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains compliance to all state and federal regulations.
  • At a frequency set by the Director and Manager, Surgical PAs, rounds on patients as the department leader at his/her respective site. Acknowledges the patient, introduces self, makes connection with the patient, identifies goals for PAs during hospitalization.


What you will need:

  • Masters Degree Physician Assistant Required Or
  • Masters Degree Business Administration/Management Required Or
  • Masters Degree Health Administration Required Or
  • Doctorate Nursing Required Or
  • Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by Council on Accreditation (COA) of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs. And
  • Doctoral degree in nursing or related field (DNP, DNSc, EdD, PhD) or current enrollment in a doctoral program is required. And
  • Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program. And
  • 3 Years of experience in clinical anesthesia practice. And
  • 1 Year of experience as an anesthesia clinical and/or didactic instructor desirable.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to work independently, and demonstrate initiative in identifying solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as a member of a team of diverse individuals, including physicians, administrators, and PA team-members.
  • Must consistently demonstrate professionalism, flexibility and ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to make staffing decisions and lead a team of clinical providers to drive quality, loyalty, and financial performance.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) unrestricted State of Illinois RN licenses. Required And
  • APRN Full Practice Authority (APRN-FPA) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) unrestricted State of Illinois APRN licenses. Required And
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) - National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) Current certification or recertification by NBCRNA. Required And
  • Licensed Physician Assistant (PA) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Current professional PA licensure in the State of Illinois. Required And
  • Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) Board certification. Preferred And
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) - American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification. Required And
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) - U.S. Department of Justice IL controlled substance and DEA. Required
