Overview
The Dean's office in the Huntsman School of Business currently has a full time opening for an Academic Advisor.

The chosen candidate will advise in matters such as pre-registration, general education, major and minor requirements, and articulation of transfer credit. The position will also help build a total Huntsman School experience, including the development of a culture of student ownership of their education, engagement through inside-the-classroom and outside-the-classroom opportunities, and the transition to meaningful careers. Selected candidate will work closely with the assigned academic department and the Dean's office.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students in the process of developing an academic program.
  • Maintain and update student files.
  • Provide students with correct up-to-date academic information about university graduation requirements.
  • Recommended students for a variety of awards and scholarships.
  • Track students' academic progress and inform them of their status.
  • Assist potential students in admission process for the School of Business.
  • Work closely with the assigned department to recruit and retain high quality students.
  • Participate in assessment activities.
  • Become familiar with tools that assist students in deciding on a major, for example, DegreeWorks and Career Service options.
  • Assist students in the development of their educational goals, including the selection of a major, meeting graduation requirements, study abroad opportunities and exploring the possibility of graduate school.
  • Help students to understand the expected standards of achievement and likelihood of success in areas of study as well as providing them information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Refer students to and maintain familiarity with available campus resources to meet individual needs.
  • Assist in other areas as needed.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in a business or related field is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and respond to the needs of a broad student population.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of student development and the ability to serve and assist the students in developing effective academic plans and career and life goals in order to promote student retention and academic success.
  • Knowledge of student advising and graduation requirements specific to the academic major, department or school, and the ability to anticipate department and student needs.
  • Ability to creatively and independently problem solve by prioritizing and multitasking while under pressure.
  • Ability to serve individuals with various personalities through the use of effective interpersonal and communication skills using various communication media including telephone, facsimile, and email.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a commitment to creating a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to understand and form a commitment to USU's mission, strategic directions, and communities of engaged learners.
  • Knowledge of University course schedules, course curriculum and degree requirements.
  • Knowledge of student advisement methods and techniques (monitoring students' classes, scheduling, academic progress and registration).
  • Ability to keep student information confidential and abide by all FERPA laws.
  • Ability to always maintain professionalism even in high stress situations.
  • Ability to be creative in additional alternative in the delivery of advising to students.
  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Understanding of development educational processes.
  • Ability to work on one's own with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of, or ability to learn University IT systems including, DegreeWorks, SSB, INB, and Paperport.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity and discretion.
  • Problem solving: Analyzes information and evaluates results to select the best solution and solve.
  • Service Orientation/Costumer service skills: Actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Critical Thinker: Uses logic and reasoning to identify solutions and approaches to problems.
