Job Summary
The Duke Regional Hospital Urology Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA-C) provides direct patient care services to adult urologic patients in the inpatient setting, collaborating with residents and surgeons. The NP/PA performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates patient care and discharge, and assists in the operating room, providing direct patient care services. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership in the organization.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Inpatient Duties



  • Daily inpatient rounding on primary and consult teams
  • Assist with daily progress notes
  • Take first call on primary urology patients
  • Review and order diagnostic and lab studies
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Provides continuity of care by working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary teams
  • Assist with admissions
  • Perform discharges
  • First assist in the operating room
  • Manage/Change/Apply wound vacs, surgical site dressings, catheters, urologic shunts
  • Assist in maintaining and improving Quality Metrics
  • Provide collaborative and cost-effective care.


Outpatient Duties



  • No outpatient coverage currently.



Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner program for adult care, acute care preferred. RNFA training is also required.

PA: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Master's Degree or DSc Degree strongly preferred.

Licensure

NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as an NP.

PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by the NCMB with approval to practice as a PA.

Both: Federal and State DEA with unrestricted prescriptive authority

Certification

NP: National certification as a Nurse Practitioner for adult care, AGACNP or ACNP strongly preferred. Plus, RNFA certification is required.

PA: PA-C

Experience

1+ years APP inpatient experience preferred but new grads meeting the education and certification requirements with relevant clinical rotations and/or RN or other clinical role with relevant experience are welcome to apply.

Life support:

BLS Required

ACLS is recommended but not required

Physical and mental requirements:



  • Able to clearly articulate the scope of practice and practices within those guidelines as an APP in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System.


  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems


  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.


  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.


  • Able to use fine motor skills


  • Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations;
  • Able to use a computer and learn new software programs
  • Able to provide leadership in the clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
  • Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations


  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking, with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
  • Able to remain focused and organized
  • Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel



Job Hours

The schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. No on-call or weekend responsibilities. The schedule may be adjusted by administrative or clinical leadership to meet departmental needs.
