Nurse Practitioner - Adult Medical Surgical

Hospital-Based Oncology

Full Time

Job Summary

The UCSF Hospital-Based Oncology Consult Service provides inpatient care for adult patients with suspected or confirmed solid tumor malignancies. This Nurse Practitioner (NP) role is based on that service and involves delivering high-quality, evidence-based oncology care across UCSF's Medical Centers at Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay. The NP will collaborate closely with attending oncologists, consulting teams, and the broader care staff to evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, and manage oncology-specific needs during hospitalization. Core responsibilities include conducting comprehensive assessments, ordering and managing inpatient chemotherapy, coordinating discharges, and facilitating seamless transitions to outpatient care. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with no weekend or call responsibilities.

The NP will function with a high degree of clinical autonomy and serve as an integral member of the inpatient oncology team. The ideal candidate will bring a strong interest in solid tumor oncology, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. This position requires flexibility to work across both UCSF campuses and offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a dynamic and collaborative inpatient service.

UCSF Medical Center requires all APPs to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Office in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). This process may take up to 90 days and must be completed prior to the start date in any APP position.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105.50 - $136.83 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Adult Medicine Unit is a 34 bed inpatient medical unit that provides care for patients ranging from young adults to the elderly presenting with a wide variety of diagnoses. The unit has the ability to admit patients requiring telemetry and/or continuous pulse oximetry.

Patients found on this unit are often admitted for acute exacerbations of complex chronic conditions with a focus on pulmonary, gastrointestinal, medical-psychological, and endocrine conditions. Patients can be admitted for diagnostic work-ups, treatment of infectious disease processes, palliative care and end of life care. In addition, this unit administers chemotherapy to treat solid tumor patients admitted to the hospital with an emphasis on treating sarcoma patients.

This unit is home to an innovative palliative care service with trained staff and multidisciplinary resources. There are two dedicated Comfort Care Suites for terminally-ill patients where a low-tech, high comfort environment is provided. These suites provide accommodations for family and friends to remain with patients around the clock. Cultural traditions around dying are actively supported.

The nurse plays an integral role in the Palliative Care team which includes Attending physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, social workers and chaplain services.

In addition to Palliative Care, nurses on this unit attend 16 hours of End-of-Life Care education and complete Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification after approximately 6 months to a year on the unit.

Medicine nurses exemplify teamwork in this fast-paced unit. They participate daily in multidisciplinary rounds which include nursing, attending physicians, case managers, social worker, pharmacists, nutrition and rehabilitation services.
