About the Internship
nLIGHT is currently recruiting for an Engineering student to intern with us for the summer of 2026. This internship is a 10 to 12-week program that offers challenging assignments, projects, and career development opportunities to enhance your professional growth. You will also earn a competitive wage based on your discipline and academic class status.
About the Team
Process Engineering is responsible for developing manufacturing and test processes for optical fiber laser systems, from concept to end-of-life; working closely with design engineers such as Optical, Mechanical, Electrical and Software; working with Production teams to manufacture complex fiber laser systems.
What You Can Expect to Learn
  • Optical fiber handling, cleaving, cleaning, fusion splicing
  • Optical fiber testing and test equipment: oscilloscope, Optical Power Meter, DMM, Optical Spectrometer, Optical Beam Characterization tools
  • Design of Experiments, statistical analysis using JMP, Minitab or Excel
  • Structured problem-solving methodologies
What You Can Expect to Do
  • Optical fiber fusion splice process development/optimization using DOE and statistical analysis
  • Design/develop method and hardware for dispensing viscous material in a precise location and amount
  • Analyze, design, develop optical fiber management tooling for manufacturing test benches
  • Record/study touch times and level load mechanical assembly processes
  • Design a rail-based laser mounting system for multiple product styles that enable single test station utilization
Who You Are
  • You possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • You take initiative and have an eagerness to learn
  • You have experience with data analysis and modeling (CAD, Python, Matlab, excel, etc)
Minimum Job Requirements
  • You must be working toward a degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
  • You must have completed (at a minimum) your sophomore year in college
  • You must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above to be considered
  • Must be able to work in a cleanroom environment: frock, mask, booties, gloves, hair net, laser safety goggles
  • Ability to use hand-tools, turn a wrench, tighten a screw, connect water hoses, electrical cables, etc

Compensation and Benefits
Pay depends on level of education completed:
  • $26 - 28/hr
Benefits
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Benefits including Prescription and Orthodontia with employee-paid premiums as low as $40.00 per pay period
