As a Scientist, you will lead and execute technical work packages, working hands-on in the lab to design, run, and analyze experiments. You will contribute directly to the development of cutting-edge upstream processes, support internal and external collaborations, and mentor junior team members. This role offers a unique blend of applied research, process optimization, and customer-focused innovation.

The Application & Testing Lab - Bioreactor Technologies in Marlborough specializes in cultivating mammalian and microbial systems to generate high-quality data that advances the development of Sartorius' bioreactor solutions. Our team conducts rigorous process testing to optimize performance, validate new designs, and produce market-relevant datasets that support product innovation. In close collaboration with customers, field teams, and global R&D groups, we translate experimental insights into practical solutions that enable more efficient and scalable bioprocessing.

What you will accomplish together with us:

  • Plan, execute, and drive experimental work packages in upstream process development, aligned with project goals and timelines.
  • Design and conduct bioreactor experiments (e.g., perfusion, fed-batch) for mAbs, recombinant proteins, and other biologics.
  • Optimize cell culture parameters for various mammalian cell lines (e.g., CHO, HEK) using Sartorius' next-generation bioreactor systems.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including downstream process development, automation, and analytics.
  • Participate in technology transfer activities to internal and external partners.
  • Contribute to exploration and implementation of new technologies in bioprocessing to advance the state-of-the-art.
  • Manage, train, and provide coverage for Associate Scientists and technicians as needed.
  • Represent Sartorius in technical discussions with customers, collaborators, and external expert groups.

What will convince us:

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field; M.S. with 4+ years relevant industry experience, or Bachelors degree with 7+ years relevant industry experience.
  • Hands-on experience with bioreactor operations (single-use and/or stainless-steel systems).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments, analyze complex data sets, and troubleshoot process issues.
  • Industry experience with mammalian cell culture and biologics manufacturing workflows.
  • Experience in mentoring and training junior scientists or technicians.
  • Familiarity with GMP principles, regulatory guidelines (FDA, EMA, ICH), and technology transfer is a plus.

Travel & Work Conditions

  • Travel up to 10%, domestic and international, as required for internal meetings, customer collaborations, and conferences. Up to 50% for the rest of 2025 to support with lab relocation activities.
  • Work in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environment; occasional extended hours or weekends to support ongoing lab activities.

Total compensation range is $85,000-$107,000, depending on qualification, experience and location.
