Position Description

The Operations Instrumentation and Electrical (I & E) Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the power plant as well as the maintenance, and repair of all instruments, control systems and electrical equipment. This classification performs highly skilled work in the inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation and removal of all electronic and electrical power plant equipment and systems.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Perform operations on plant equipment and auxiliaries as directed, such as starting, stopping and clearing equipment during normal operations, emergencies and for repairs.
  • Will be required to know and adhere to established first aid practices, plant safety rules and procedures including emergency response.
  • Prepare maintenance requests for equipment needing repair.
  • Perform other duties as directed such as, preparing reports, logs and time sheets and perform general housekeeping duties.
  • Will be required to participate in on- or off-the-job training as required.
  • Must be able to personally respond to plant emergencies, which will also include call outs and over time as needed to support plant operations. Must be willing to work both rotating and standard shifts, as required, with periodic shift changes.
  • Responsible to their immediate supervisor to ensure that they comply with the Environmental Compliance Program and that they have taken all reasonable precautions to prevent incidents of noncompliance by themselves or on the part of others.
  • Must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents and be in compliance with the company safety manual(s) and all environmental permits at all times.
  • Make routine chemical readings and tests.

* Responsible to their immediate supervisor to ensure that they comply with the Environmental Compliance Program and that they have taken all reasonable precautions to prevent incidents of noncompliance by themselves or on the part of others.

  • Perform preventive maintenance duties on all major equipment and systems as well as emergency backup systems. Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
  • Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment.
  • Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability. Assist in periodic physical inventories in conjunction with UES warehouse personnel and standards.
  • Inspect, repair, install and remove all types of pumps, compressors, valves, filters, nozzles etc. associated with power plant equipment and auxiliaries.
  • Inspect, repair, install and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries, and work with electrical systems up to and including 15,000 volts.
  • Proficient in the utilization, trouble shooting and analysis on DCS, PLC, and HMI turbine control equipment.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor to this position, but not specifically stated in this description.
  • Will be subject to and be required to adhere to all terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Working on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 75 pounds.
  • Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and high voltage protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.
  • Working safely with hazardous materials may be required with appropriate training.
  • Must be physically capable of climbing stairs and ladders and capable of physically demanding work at heights and possibly in adverse conditions during operations and when participating in fire/emergency activities.
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space.
  • Must be physically capable to initially pass a respirator pulmonary function physical and respirator fit test and periodically thereafter as required.
  • This position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, work load, weather, power demand and plant conditions.
  • The incumbent may be required to perform an operational, maintenance and/or emergency function. Such function may be in a safety sensitive role during the course of the calendar year and might include receiving and acting upon product release calls.
  • Position will be subject to PHMSA pre-employment drug and random drug/alcohol screening.

Education & Experience

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Instrument Technical Program or an approved and accredited apprenticeship program and two (2) years work experience as a technician in a related industry is desirable.
  • Four (4) years of experience as a technician with increasing responsibility in a related industry may be substituted for the above.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique I & E problems is desirable.
  • Must be able to work from blueprints.
  • Must be skilled in the use of hand and power driven tools.
  • Must successfully complete job related tests.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Must have strong personal computer skills including the MS Office Suite i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and some familiarity with AutoCAD.
  • Experience in working with voltages up to 15,000 volts highly desirable.
  • Prefer LM 6000 gas turbine experience.
  • Previous power plant experience as a plant operator is highly preferred.
  • Must have current Arizona driver's license in good standing.

Pay Rate: $57.41 - $59.01 DOQ
