Heavy Equipment Operator I (Street Maintenance)

Department 1

Streets (Construction)

Summary

Responsible for operating equipment in removing asphalt/concrete pavement, excavating earth, placing, and compacting recycled concrete, base materials, asphalt, and performing installation, repair, and maintenance related tasks.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate and train staff on construction equipment such as backhoe loaders, industrial box blade/loaders, skid steer loaders, utility wheel loaders, compactors, rotary mixers and tractors with 30-yeard end dump trailers.

  • Set paving forms, cut and place rebar, place and finish concrete, remove paving forms, clean debris, and backfill new pavement with soil and sod.

  • Inspect and maintain the safe operation of heavy equipment and vehicles, including performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete daily worksheet.

  • Respond to weather events and emergencies, including the ability to work shift schedules when required

  • Operate sanding trucks and aggregate spreaders on bridges, intersections, and streets

  • Load and deliver traffic control devices for high water events, and perform final clean-up to ensure alleys and streets are passable for emergency vehicles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 6 months of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job.

  • Valid Class A Texas Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds or more multiple times daily.

Department 2

Streets (Street Maintenance)

Summary

Responsible for operating heavy equipment and vehicles in the maintenance and repair of streets and alleys.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Work Schedule: TBD

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate a 12-yard dump truck.

  • Identify equipment needs for each assigned project and transport materials between job sites.

  • Operate specialized heavy equipment to level lift various types of pavements, patch various types of pavements with hot and cold asphalt, crack seal various types of pavements with a hot tar sealant, and grade unimproved alleys.

  • Inspect and maintain the safe operation of heavy equipment and vehicles, including performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete daily worksheet.

  • Operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets or alleys during inclement weather events.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 2 years of experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job.

  • Valid Class A Texas Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.

Department 3

Streets/Stormwater (Drainage Maintenance)

Job Summary

Responsible for operating heavy equipment to maintain inlets, drainage pipe, creeks and channels within the city.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Work Schedule: TBD

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate a 12-yard dump truck.

  • Identify equipment needs for each assigned project and transport materials between job sites.

  • Operate specialized heavy equipment to perform tasks including: mow creeks, road ditches, drainage channels, sweep streets, clean inlets, and set storm sewer pipe.

  • Inspect and maintain safe operation of heavy equipment and vehicles, including performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete daily worksheet.

  • Operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets and/or alleys during inclement weather incidents.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 6 months of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job.

  • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors with frequent exposure to traffic, weather conditions, and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more multiple times daily.

Department 4

Landfill

Summary

Responsible for operating heavy equipment and other vehicles for the purpose of excavating, processing, and compacting substances on a daily basis. Also responsible for the efficient operation and care of assigned equipment.

Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Typically operate a water truck, dump truck, or roll-off truck at the landfill site.

  • Maintain the functionality, appearance and safety of the work area or facilities in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

  • Maintain landscape, drainage and slope erosion measures of the landfill.

  • Maintain safe operation of heavy equipment and vehicles, including performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete daily worksheet for equipment operated.

  • Excavate and haul cover materials for construction; build, grade and clean roads and parking areas; build run on/ run off beams to control water runoff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • One year of experience in operating solid waste and other automotive equipment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job.

  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

The incumbent works primarily in a vehicle; long drive time or outside work on a daily basis in all weather conditions; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more multiple times daily.
