Description

The Town of Needham is seeking a qualified individual for the position ofEngineering Aide within the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works. Under the supervision of the Senior AutoCAD Technician, the Engineering Aide assists in daily tasks such as field surveys, setting up surveying equipment, recording information, and assisting on a variety of engineering projects in support of departmental goals and objectives.

The Engineering Division provides surveying, drafting, estimating, scheduling, and inspectional services for the Department of Public Works and other Town departments. They consult on most large construction projects and assist with capital planning activities, as well as archive maps and plans relating to Town site plans, property lines, and infrastructure.

Schedule: 40 hours/week

  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm;
  • Tuesday, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm;
  • Friday, 8:00 am - 1:00 pm

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:

  • Assists in performing field surveys by measuring distances, bearings and/or grades, setting up survey equipment, recording required information, and performing related work to obtain preliminary and final field work information as directed and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Utilizes standard surveying and staking equipment such as transits, levels, EDM's, total stations, and related equipment and supplies.
  • Provides supportive administrative and paraprofessional services for various projects related to the construction and/or maintenance of civil infrastructure.
  • Assists with the coordination of activities between divisions during construction, tracks materials and general construction information, and aids in crosschecking invoices and contracts with various vendors and coordinating partners.
  • Calculates estimates and collects data for future construction projects; relays important construction and engineering work information to relevant Engineering Division personnel.
  • Supports AutoCAD and GIS functions.
  • Responds to public inquiries with relevant information.

Requirements

The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an Associates Degree or two years of technical or business school
  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Ability to work with a team or independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a variety of stakeholders
