Embark on an exciting journey with SWCA as an Environmental Planning Intern for Summer 2026 in our Pensacola or Jacksonville, FL offices. As an Environmental Planning Intern, you'll gain exposure to a variety of environmental planning and NEPA-related tasks and collaborate with skilled planning and natural resource professionals. This internship offers a unique opportunity to launch your career in environmental sciences, supported by leadership dedicated to your professional growth.

The internship spans from early June to mid-August 2026, with flexibility for early starters and those interested in extending beyond August. Alongside impactful project work, our program includes regular presentations by SWCA leaders.

This is a paid, full-time internship at $19.00 per hour.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist in preparing environmental documents for a variety of state and federal agencies.
  • Support diverse environmental planning projects, especially related to NEPA, including traditional and renewable energy, transmission, land-use planning, water resources, and transportation.
  • Learn to draft sections of environmental documents and review/edit materials developed by technical specialists.
  • Potentially support preparation of public meeting materials, public comment review, and administrative record maintenance.
  • Gain exposure to how SWCA advises clients on federal and state regulatory requirements across various project types.
  • Work closely with project managers, directors, and leaders throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in alignment with our mission, vision, and values.
  • Gain experience working with a diverse team of planning and natural resource professionals.
  • Adhere to SWCA's safety program, looking out for the safety of yourself and others, and promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a bachelor's degree in an environmental-related field with coursework in environmental policy, environmental science, ecology, urban planning, sustainability, geography, or a similar discipline, or a recent graduate within 12 months of May 1, 2026. Individuals who have completed at least their junior year are highly preferred. Equivalent experience may also be considered.
  • Applicants pursuing a Master's degree will also be considered. Ph.D. candidates are not eligible for this program.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability and willingness to learn technical writing skills and environmental planning concepts.

Preferred Skills:

  • Technical writing experience.
  • Experience with natural resources fieldwork or environmental-related professional/intern experience (e.g., environmental, natural, water, biological, planning projects) through coursework, capstone projects, or volunteer work
