Summary of Position

Under direct supervision, aid with general laboratory duties including QA equipment readings, reagent preparation, cleaning of equipment and glassware and the filing of patient folders and specimens. Consistently adheres to laboratory policies for safety, conduct, and performances.



Key Job Elements



  • Perform a variety of routine duties (restocking reagents, maintaining temperature charts, unpack and distribute shipments) according to departmental protocol and timeframes.
  • Maintains clean work areas, disinfects counters in the designated areas.
  • Receives, restocks, and notifies appropriate personnel of potential stock shortages while maintaining appropriate inventory to ensure all required work can be performed.
  • Maintains complete, accurate and up-to-date documents such as equipment logs and worksheets, such that information can be accessed immediately or in a timely manner.
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on designated equipment completely and accurately such that the equipment is in optimal working conditions.
  • Assist molecular technologist with assay preparation.
  • Discards retained specimens according to departmental protocol and timeframes.
  • Setup patient samples into run category and aide in specimen preparation for the technologist.
  • Provide related responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Experience



  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Familiar with routine and general laboratory maintenance including ordering, receiving, inventory and maintaining laboratory supply and equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, attention to detail, flexibility, and proactive desire to engage in daily laboratory work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Non-technical laboratory personnel must complete at least six hours of continuing education annually.



Working Conditions



  • Exposure to biological hazards associated with human specimens. Standard universal precautions required for handling specimens.
  • A moderate amount of standing and sitting. Ability to routinely lift 50 lbs; ability to tolerate prolonged sitting; ability to tolerate repeated routine tasks.
