Job Summary

This position is scheduled to begin August 2026.

Candidate will be committed to supporting the philosophy, mission, and goals of the Maricopa County Community College District, Mesa Community College, and the Counseling Department, including interaction and collaboration with a wide variety of students, faculty, administrators, community members, and staff.

This position may be expected to serve the students, department, and college at any site. The anticipated teaching assignment for this position will be 6-9 load hours (to be adjusted as needed) per semester under the CAP, CPD, BHS, and/or FYE prefixes with the possibility of overload. There will be 6-9 load hours (to be adjusted as needed) providing counseling support services including educational, career, personal supportive, preventive, collaborative, and crisis response. This position would teach and provide counseling support services during the day and in-person. Depending on the needs of the department and the strengths of the selected candidate, hybrid and/or evening counseling and/or teaching loads are possibilities. This position will also provide mentoring, degree advisement, marketing of degree and programs, outreach and collaboration with other colleges and universities, consulting with faculty and community agencies, serving on committees, providing workshops, presentations, trainings, and build overall student engagement opportunities. Preference for candidates who are licensed and have practiced in the field. Experience working with first-year programming and/or instruction desired.

In this role, Residential Service Faculty will be required to complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP) during each of their first five (5) years of employment to account for their teaching, service, and professional development in order to receive appointive status.

Essential Functions

Provides in-person and virtual counseling support services via scheduled appointments as well as drop-in coverage to meet with students seeking individual attention related to personal, academic, and career concerns; provides support in managing emergency situations/crisis response, ranging from individual crisis intervention to campus-level incidents; provides professional consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators related to student concerns and referrals; responds via face-to-face, phone, and/or email.

Teaches FYE/CAP/CPD/BHS courses (primarily first year experience and counseling courses) and conducts workshops and class/group presentations; prepares and delivers course-related materials to satisfy course competencies, creates syllabi and lesson plans, offers instructional support/academic support hours, and delivers workshops on a variety of counseling, academic, and personal development topics.

Participates on a variety of campus and district-level committees, program initiatives, special projects, curriculum development and faculty/staff training; maintains a collaborative team approach within the counseling discipline, and with other campus team assignments; takes responsibility and leadership of programs as assigned/requested. Engages in active faculty development programming, including mandatory new faculty orientation and evaluation activities, as well as opportunities for professional skill-development in instructional, counseling, and/or consultation roles.

Minimum Qualifications

A master's degree or higher with an emphasis in counseling from a regionally accredited college or university and have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester/thirty-six (36) quarter hours or equivalent of graduate work including the following:

1. Counseling Theories and Techniques
2. Personality Theories or Human Development
3. Testing Theories and Applications
4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques
5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources
6. Individual Assessment
7. Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling.

Desired Qualifications

A. Demonstrated experience in providing in-person as well as virtual counseling support services to a variety of populations with setting educational, career, and personal goals as well as addressing barriers in their educational, career, and personal pathways.

B. Demonstrated experience in higher education providing in-person and virtual instruction (BHS, CAP, CPD, FYE preferred or equivalent).

C. Demonstrated experience with First Year Experience programs, classes, workshops, or equivalent.

D. Demonstrated experience intervening with mental health crises to assess issues, provide crisis response services in collaboration with campus resources, and facilitate community mental health agency referrals.

E. Demonstrated experience with innovation and creativity in programming development and/or implementation.

F. Demonstrated experience in higher education working with teams and/or collaborating with students, faculty, and staff contributing to an environment that promotes student wellness and fosters a sense of belonging.

G. Licensed at the Associate or Independent level in Counseling, Marriage and Family, or Clinical Psychology.

Special Working Conditions
  • May be assigned to work at various MCC campus locations.
  • Local travel to multiple college locations, District office, meetings across the MCCC District, and local high schools as required; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving if using MCC vehicle.
  • May be required to lift objects up to 25 pounds.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.
  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
