The University of Arizona Libraries invites you to apply for the position of Assistant or Associate Librarian, Instructional Strategies and STEM.

The Instructional Strategies and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Librarian will play a pivotal role within the Strategies in Teaching and Research Unit of the Libraries Student Learning and Engagement department in expanding library engagement with STEM students, departments, and faculty on campus. This engagement includes information literacy instruction within STEM disciplines, interfacing with faculty on standards and patents, and responding to reference and research requests in STEM areas. This role emphasizes specialized instruction and research support, and a strong understanding of best practices in library and technology pedagogy to the University of Arizona campus.

The Instructional Strategies and STEM Librarian will engage STEM faculty and instructors, and STEM cohort librarians, to integrate and scaffold information, digital, and data literacies into the curriculum. Additionally, they will support faculty and graduate students in their research and collaborate with colleagues across the libraries to meet evolving needs. As a member of the Strategies in Teaching and Research (STAR) team, reporting to the Unit Lead for STAR, this position will collaborate on the development of engaging digital learning objects and opportunities across campus and create collaborative partnerships with campus faculty, students, and staff. They will help assess and investigate emerging technologies for integration into learning and teaching efforts and will collaborate with SLE colleagues along with other Libraries departments to build new processes, partnerships, and connections to expand the impact of our instruction program.

This is a continuing-eligible or continuing status track academic professional position. Duties & Responsibilities

Instructional Strategist & Member of Strategies in Teaching and
Research Unit

  • Builds relationships with faculty, instructors, and campus units to identify opportunities for library integrated instruction, research support, and outreach, with a focus on STEM.
  • Plans and implements sustainable outreach and engagement strategies to connect library resources, services, and instruction to needs on campus.
  • Develops and delivers effective instructional services in STEM and other areas, emphasizing active and assessable learning opportunities including in-class sessions, teach-the-teacher professional development, online tutorials or guides, course assignments, or other instructional innovations.
  • Seeks out and pursues opportunities where the library can facilitate greater research or instructional productivity, or improve student learning, by integrating new or existing services into the teaching, learning, or research workflows, with a focus on STEM units on campus.
  • Identifies
    gaps in current instructional or research support for upper-division and
    graduate student groups and collaborates on interventions.
  • Fosters strong collaborative partnerships with the RISE unit to scaffold research skill development across the student learning lifecycle.
  • Leads the STEM cohort-level triaging for all instruction service requests in STEM.
  • Collaborates with campus units to support upper-division and graduate student initiatives.
  • Contributes to the planning, creation, and assessment of instructional eLearning objects (e.g. online tutorials) for use by librarians, instructors, and students.
  • Oversees select co-curricular instruction programs in collaboration with campus partnerships (e.g. UAL's micro-credential program).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Cohort Liaison Librarian for STEM

  • Serves as an academic liaison through participation in the STEM Disciplinary Cohort.
  • Collaborates with cohort members to triage requests for reference, consultation, and instruction, cross-training skills as necessary to benefit the entire cohort.
  • Collaborates with cohort members on special projects and priorities in support of STEM services.
  • Provides consultations via email and through scheduled meetings.
  • Provides referrals to other services, facilities, organizations, or information sources.
  • Plans and provides in-person, virtual, and hybrid course-integrated library instruction sessions.
  • Creates and updates instructional materials, learning modules and tutorials using a variety of formats including print, digital, web-based, and emerging technologies.
  • Collects and analyzes assessment efforts to inform the cohort's programmatic work.

Service

  • Participates
    in the work of relevant professional associations.
  • Contributes
    to local, state, regional, national, or international library initiatives.
  • Participates
    in department, library, or university activities.
  • Serves
    on library and university committees, as needed, as related to areas of
    responsibility.
  • Contributes
    to the goals and strategic initiatives of the Libraries.
  • The UA
    Libraries support the UA's strategic initiatives designed to create a
    welcoming environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The candidate is expected to support
    related strategic efforts in the department and Libraries.

Scholarship/Research

  • Conducts
    relevant scholarly research and disseminates findings through writing and
    other venues.
  • Delivers
    presentations related to academic libraries, higher education, and other
    areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates
    commitment to continued professional development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and administrators in STEM disciplines and across campus.
  • Ability to assess needs and provide point-of-need assistance referrals to appropriate expert services within the libraries.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, one that values and leverages the benefits of a variety of perspectives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continual professional development, improvement, and learning.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or other relevant advanced degree.
  • Evidence of the ability to achieve continuing status (equivalent to tenure), including in the information/library profession and to fulfilling the responsibilities of a library faculty member through service and scholarship.
  • Experience incorporating information literacies into the curriculum through varying modalities, including instruction and digital learning objects.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting research and instruction within STEM-focused disciplines.
  • Experience using instructional design principles and knowledge of their implementation in higher education and/or academic libraries.
  • Experience providing instruction, reference, research consultation services, or workshops.
  • Experience or interest in campus disciplinary outreach and scalable relationship-building.
  • Experience developing, promoting, managing, and assessing learning programs and outreach activities.
