MBSE Intern

Astrion
United States, D.C., Washington
Dec 05, 2025
Overview

Job Description

Astrion is seeking a Part-Time student intern for the Deep Space Logistics Engineering Support (LENS) Contract to support the Deep Space Logistics (DSL) the Fleet Manager and MBSE team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will support the following tasks and activities:

Tasking that LENS will assist DSL with under this concept includes:

  • Creation and maintenance/update of library component models supporting the development of GLS mission models for use in establishing mission definition baselines, supporting what-if mission development, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Creation of necessary modeling and process documentation for mature DSL CM and model management processes.
  • Develop foundational DSL Reference Models in MagicDraw - essentially creating reusable system architecture templates and simulation frameworks that any future DSL mission can inherit and customize. This approach would leverage their programming expertise while building critical MBSE infrastructure we currently haven't developed. Rather than starting from scratch on each mission, we'd have standardized models for spacecraft architectures, mission phase workflows, and parametric trade studies that connect directly to our existing requirements structure. Examples of deliverable models include:
    • Generic spacecraft architecture models (modular design patterns)
    • Standard mission phase templates (launch, transit, operations, return)
    • Parametric models for common logistics scenarios
    • Reusable component libraries in MagicDraw
  • Develop general deliverables without mission-specific data:
    • Generic system architectures for power, propulsion, and communications
    • Mission phase frameworks with standard activity flows, decision points, and resource consumption patterns
    • Trade study templates for parametric models analyzing mass vs. power vs. duration trade-offs
    • Requirements pattern libraries containing common requirement types and structures for logistics missions
  • Assist DSL staff in the development of a comprehensive "Mission Planning Toolkit" - standardized models and simulation capabilities that any future DSL mission can inherit and customize. This creates lasting intellectual property that supports our core DSL mission.

Deliverables:

  • At the end of each semester, each intern will be required to create and present a 30-minute conference presentation style out-brief detailing their progress during the semester.
  • Participation in MBSE working group meetings.
  • Model products as defined by the MBSE working group members.

Skills and Requirements:

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an engineering or scientific undergraduate (Intern 1) or graduate (Intern 2) program at an accredited college or university with a >3.0 GPA.
  • Prior experience with MBSE model development and coding.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a US Government Background check.

Preferred:

  • Working to expert knowledge of MagicDraw.
  • Command line/powershell scripting experience for the development of MBSE scripts.
  • Proven ability to learn new programming languages and modeling approaches and implement them to achieve project objectives.
  • Prior experience working with NASA and/or DSL MBSE models and programs.
  • Prior NASA internship experience.
