Job Summary

This position, under minimal supervision, ensures all aspects of care for the trauma patient are entered into the trauma registry. This position is responsible for abstracting data from the electronic health record in accordance with the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) and state of Colorado standards. Performs a variety of functions to support the collection and coordination of Trauma Performance Improvement statistics with emphasis on data entry into a comprehensive computerized management system. Collects trauma data for injury research and prevention as well as quality improvement tracking and assures accuracy and confidentiality in the handling of all Trauma registry related matters and is concerned with and active in the improvement of trauma Registry Program within the facility. Works collaboratively with the Trauma Nurse Coordinators and Performance Improvement Nurse

Essential Functions:

  • Collect and enter data points into the trauma registry to support the trauma program reporting requirements. (20%)
  • Abstracts the required average volume of charts on a monthly basis. (20%)
  • Confidently navigates an electronic health record for required data (10%)
  • Abstracts, analyzes, and codes details of medical record for trauma registry information (10%)
  • Collect and enter data points into the trauma registry to support the trauma programs performance improvement activities. (10%)
  • Collect and enter data points to support the research activities for trauma (10%)
  • Maintain current knowledge of the Trauma Data dictionary, TQIP and NTDB updates (10%)
  • Maintain current knowledge in data aggregation, policies and procedures (5%)
  • Participates in departmental educational activities (5%)

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Work Experience:

  • One year coding experience OR previous working with trauma registry databases and handling medical information in a health care setting **required**

Licenses:

  • CSTR-Certified Specialist Trauma Registries - ATS - American Trauma Society OR
  • AIS-Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale - AAAM - Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess good computer keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, work flow, and operating procedures.
  • Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to read and interpret clinical data from a medical record.
  • Familiarity with ICD 10 Diagnosis and procedure coding preferred.
  • Familiarity with Abbreviated Injury Scale/ Injury Severity Scores (AIS/ISS) preferred.
  • Experience with computer databases preferred.
