Job Description
Primary Purpose
Develops and leads complex safety engineering initiatives, applying specialized depth and breadth to design innovative solutions and influence crossfunctional adoption. Strengthens risk management by integrating safety into process design, validating controls with data, and guiding teams through change with clear technical communication.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts detailed risk assessments for new or modified processes and specifies engineered and administrative controls aligned with recognized standards.
- Leads multisite or multiline audits for critical hazards such as machine guarding and fall prevention and directs closure verification.
- Establishes investigation protocols and quality criteria, mentors investigators, and reviews complex cases for systemic learning.
- Authors and updates safety procedures and design guidelines and secures alignment across engineering, maintenance, and operations.
- Builds analytical dashboards that connect leading indicators to incident patterns and quantifies program impact.
- Partners with product and process engineers to embed safetybydesign features that reduce inherent risk.
- Presents technical recommendations to site leadership, negotiating priorities and resources to address highimpact risks.
- Represents the site during regulatory or customer audits, articulating control strategies and responding to technical inquiries.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education
- Typically requires a 4 year degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience
- Typically requires 8 years of related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis - Applies structured methods to identify hazards, estimate risk, and recommend controls for equipment, processes, and tasks; synthesizes findings into practical controls consistent with engineering principles and recognized standards.
- Incident Investigation and Root Cause - Leads factbased investigations using techniques such as causal analysis and faulttree thinking; defines corrective and preventive actions and verifies their longterm effectiveness.
- SafetybyDesign Integration - Partners with product and process engineering to embed protective measures and inherently safer design features during concept, design, and change reviews, aligning with industry guidance and lifecycle standards.
- Regulatory Compliance Application - Interprets and applies applicable occupational safety requirements and local authority expectations in daily operations, audits, and documentation, ensuring practices remain consistent with accepted engineering principles.
- Audit and Verification Mastery - Designs and executes focused audits for priority risks; evaluates control effectiveness with field verification and closes gaps through measurable action plans.
- Functional Safety and Safety Integrity - Evaluates machine and system safety functions against relevant standards (for example, International Electrotechnical Commission 61508 and International Organization for Standardization 13849), performs analyses (such as failure modes and effects or fault trees), and documents safety cases where required.
- Safety Training and Coaching - Develops targeted training and delivers coaching that improves onthejob behaviors; measures comprehension and field application to confirm learning sticks.
- Contractor and HighRisk Work Oversight - Establishes clear expectations for third parties, verifies permits and prerequisites for highrisk tasks (for example, controlled fire work and confined space entry), and conducts field spot checks to ensure discipline.
- DataDriven Safety Performance - Builds and interprets dashboards that connect leading indicators, inspection findings, and incident trends; prioritizes interventions and communicates insights to leaders and stakeholders.
- Emergency Readiness and Resp+D22:D30onse Coordination - Maintains readiness of emergency equipment and procedures, runs drills with clear learning objectives, and integrates lessons into procedures and training.
