Essential Job Duties
Assist in day-to-day research and propagation activities at the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Laboratory:

  • Captive care of freshwater fishes, mussels and snails of all life stages, including feeding, enclosure cleaning, water quality testing, system maintenance and repair, and animal health assessments
  • Propagation of freshwater mussels via in vitro methods, including data collection, media preparation, sorting and counting of larvae, performing media changes, and overall use of sterile technique in the laboratory.
  • Collection of freshwater fishes and mussels in the wild via electrofishing, seining, and snorkeling
  • Construction, plumbing, maintenance, and repair of conservation aquaculture systems at the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Laboratory
  • Data collection and entry and assisting with report preparation
  • Monitoring and maintenance of mussels at a remote grow-out location in Wake County, NC
  • Assist in lab extension activities, including preparation for and execution of tours


Work Schedule:
Primarily 9am-5pm, M-F with some occasional weekend work. Weekend hours are shared by staff on a rotational basis and consist of approximately 2 hours on a Saturday or Sunday at a flexible time

  • Combination of training and experience required to perform the duties
Department Required Skills

  • Experience in field collection of freshwater fishes and mussels as well as captive care of fishes, mussels and freshwater snails.
  • Ability to diagnose animal health and system function issues and take appropriate action.
  • Experience in all aspects of in vitro propagation of freshwater mussels.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • BS Fisheries and Wildlife, Conservation Biology or closely related field
  • Experience working with mussel species on the Atlantic Slope of NC
  • Experience in rearing of young juvenile mussels, including feeding, sediment changes and health assessments
  • Ability and experience with plumbing aquatic systems and fabrication of other items used in conservation aquaculture
  • experience maintaining aquatic snails, including recognition and rearing of their life stages and water quality requirements
