| Essential Job Duties |
Assist in day-to-day research and propagation activities at the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Laboratory:
- Captive care of freshwater fishes, mussels and snails of all life stages, including feeding, enclosure cleaning, water quality testing, system maintenance and repair, and animal health assessments
- Propagation of freshwater mussels via in vitro methods, including data collection, media preparation, sorting and counting of larvae, performing media changes, and overall use of sterile technique in the laboratory.
- Collection of freshwater fishes and mussels in the wild via electrofishing, seining, and snorkeling
- Construction, plumbing, maintenance, and repair of conservation aquaculture systems at the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Laboratory
- Data collection and entry and assisting with report preparation
- Monitoring and maintenance of mussels at a remote grow-out location in Wake County, NC
- Assist in lab extension activities, including preparation for and execution of tours
Work Schedule:
Primarily 9am-5pm, M-F with some occasional weekend work. Weekend hours are shared by staff on a rotational basis and consist of approximately 2 hours on a Saturday or Sunday at a flexible time |

- experience maintaining aquatic snails, including recognition and rearing of their life stages and water quality requirements
